Tamara Lilly-Crawford is looking forward to having a fun-filled summer as the
operator of Down East Family Camping located off Route 27 in Wiscasset.
Tamara announced recently that the Robert Nesbitt family of Edgecomb, who
have run the campground up until now, are moving on to other adventures. The
Crawford family bought the Nesbitt's house which is located adjacent to the
campground.
Although the Nesbitts still own the campground, the Crawford family will
lease the land for the summer of 1999.
``Having purchased a home adjacent to the campground makes this an ideal
opportunity,'' Tamara said. ``The campground is something of an unexpected
treasure relative to the summer congestion in this area.''
``The Nesbitts have taken such care during three decades of ownership of the
land to conserve and protect the natural beauty and well being of the pond
and surrounding forest.''
The Crawford family has been involved with camping since the late 1980's.
They have traveled extensively from the east coast to the southwestern United
States, arriving at Down East Family Camping two summers ago in their RV.
Tamara is a native of Woolwich who worked for the Nesbitts last season. She
is busily preparing for the opening Memorial Day weekend.
Although the campground hosts visitors every year from other New England
states, and such places as New York, Canada, and Europe, Tamara is hoping to
attract more locals.
``There are a lot of locals who don't take advantage of the things we offer
here,'' she said. ``Down East is good for people who want to get away
briefly. People will feel like they are away from home without driving the
distance.''
According to Tamara, Down East Family Camping hosts group events and is an
ideal location for church family camps and organizational functions, with the
availability of a private group site or blocks of individual sites for larger
gatherings.
The campground offers youngsters and adults activities like volleyball,
horseshoes, badminton, softball games, paddleboats, canoes, and swimming. In
addition, there are spacious wooded sites, a sandy beach, hiking trails,
children's activities, and much more for campers and season pass members.
When the weather outside is dreary, shelter and fun can be found at the
campground's recreation hall. The hall has a pool table, ping-pong, board
games, and arcade games.
Tamara said she is in the process of organizing more activities.
``I would like to offer workshops on various camping skills including making
our own fishing lures, recognizing animal tracks, and nature photography,''
she said.
Tamara added people who support ``Make A Wish'' and ``Fresh Air Fund'' are
allowed to camp for free one night.
Daily swim passes at reasonable prices will be available based on occupancy.
Prices are $16 to $22 a night, depending on the site. A season's pass - which
includes visiting times from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. - is offered at $90.
For local residents a limited day pass Monday through Friday (based on
availability) is offered at $3 for adults and $1 for children.
