Woolwich Generates Highest Number of Police Calls in County

Charlotte Boynton

Woolwich consistently generates the highest number of police complaints in the county, according to the Sagadahoc Sheriffs department.

According to County Detective John Burne, between August 1 and August 28, the Sagadahoc Sheriffs Department answered 151 calls to Woolwich.

Woolwich has a very busy section of Route 1, Burne said. In addition to the new bridge and the growing population, it makes for a very busy area for the county.

The majority of the calls are either traffic offenses, or accidents.

The sheriffs report indicates there were 10 accidents on Route 1, and 47 traffic offenses during that four week period.

There was one accident on Route 127 and 15 traffic offenses.

Other accidents occurred on the Old Stage Road (1), Birchwood Road (1), Meadow Road (1), Hall Road (1), Mountain Road (2), River Road (1), and the Chopps Cross Road (1).

The Sheriffs department also answered calls in Woolwich for such things as criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, theft, harassment, a citizen dispute, trespassing, burglary, and many others.

In an effort to slow the Route 1 traffic in Woolwich the selectmen voted to pay extra money to the county to have a deputy patrol extra hours.

The Woolwich Traffic Safety Committee, made up of citizens, has met with the Department of Transportation, State Police and the Sagadahoc Sheriffs department to try to resolve the traffic problem in Woolwich.

The new Sagadahoc Bridge with its four lanes of traffic coming into the village of Woolwich at speeds that exceed the speed limit have caused concern to the residents who live in the area.

David Kloberdans, a spokesperson for the Safety Committee said this week, The traffic is not getting any better.

The sheriffs report for the past four weeks would indicate the county is spending more time on traffic violations in Woolwich than they are on crime.

Because Woolwich generates the highest number of police calls in the county, it doesn't mean the town has the highest crime rate. It does, however, have a very busy section of Route 1 that starts at the Sagadahoc Bridge and ends at Wiscassets town line.
