Selectmen Will Put Cell Tower Moratorium Before Voters
John Meo
Wiscasset voters will have an additional item to deal with come Sept. 12.
They will be asked to decide whether they want to enact a 180-day moratorium
on cell towers in town and then pursue an ordinance regulating their
placement.
Two towers have already been put up in Wiscasset with a third on the way on
Whippoorwill Hill.
Art Ethier, a member of the Wiscasset Planning Board, came before selectmen
Tuesday night, as a citizen, to request the action.
Ethier explained to selectmen that anyone wishing to erect a cell tower need
only speak with the code enforcement officer. The planning board had no
jurisdiction over the placement of towers.
We have no ordinances to protect the town, Ethier said.
It seems reasonable to have something in place, commented Wiscasset First
Selectman Ben Rines.
Lenny Ellis said a moratorium will just force companies down the road to
Dresden.
Jennifer Carleton asked about the possible loss of tax money if Wiscasset
made it difficult for interested parties to erect towers.
We have to weigh the protection of the town against tax dollars, answered
Rines.
Mowing Bids
Selectmen will be including with the miscellaneous mowing bid form a letter
instructing all would-be bidders that they must register equipment with the
town for assessing and taxing.
I guess it doesnt hurt, said Rines. One gentlemen, however, said in no
uncertain terms that he would not register. We shouldnt waste the 34 cents on
him.
Third Selectmen Roy Barnes agreed with Rines, saying it would be a waste to
send letters when no one would reply.
Mowing bids will be accepted until Monday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m. They will be
opened on Tuesday.
Special Town Meeting Warrant
Rines announced that Maine Yankees gift to the town to help alleviate the tax
burden would by approximately $970,000.
Jail Committee
Selectmen voted to have Rines sit on a sub-committee involved with the site
search for the Lincoln-Sagadahoc jail.
Good Deeds
Selectmen signed two quitclaim deeds releasing property on Ox Horn Road and
on Foye Road. They also approved the property boundary separating land owned
by Choppie Tarbox and The Sunken Garden, owned by the town.
