Organ Re-dedication At St. Philip's
Bishop Chilton Knudsen will be joining the congregation of St. Philip's Episcopal Church for a sung evensong Sunday, October 6 at 4 p.m. on Hodge St. in Wiscasset. As part of the service, Bishop Knudsen will be re-dedicating the church's 1918 E. M. Skinner Organ, which was completely restored last fall by the Spencer Organ Company of Massachusetts under the direction of its president, Joseph Rotella. The organ is No. 282 of about 1,200 organs built by the Skinner Company of Boston. According to Rotella, "Skinner was a very high-end builder. The organs had a distinctive sound; the quality shows through the instrument. There's just not many of these around." Although a small organ with only seven ranks of pipes, it is a rarity in that it has been returned to its orginal condition rather than expanded upon or "boosted" in sound and size. The organ has been back in use for services at St. Philip's since Christmas of 2001, but it was not until August of this year that it was showcased for the public through a concert given by Robert Reeves, a nationally-known concert organist currently serving at St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Sarasota, Fla. "This Sunday afternoon, the congregation and public alike will have the opportunity to hear the organ used for its intended purpose, that of leading and supporting a worship service," said choir director Lois Kwantz. "Evening prayer in a sung format is a most beautiful and spiritual experience for all its participants -- celebrant, organist, choir and congregation alike. "We invite all to join us in this special service as we celebrate and re-dedicate this wonderful instrument for its use in ministry at St. Philip's." Those attending the service are invited to a light supper reception in the church parish hall afterwards. |
