Wiscasset Senior Center
Doc Schilke
Last Wednesday, our after dinner speaker talked about railroads. Next Wednesday the subject will be boats. Bobby Ives will be the guest speaker and will do a slide show about boat building. We have been trying for over a year to get this show scheduled. This promises to be one of the top presentations of the year. If you are into boats or if you know someone who is, this is a show not to be missed. Let all your friends know about this show and do make a reservation soon. Next Monday, Suzanne Bryer, 18 year resident of Maui, Hawaii and daughter of Senior Center members Jo and John Bryer, will present a special program. I'm not sure what it is but I've been assured that it will be very interesting. Chris Hall's talk last Wednesday, about passenger trains returning to Wiscasset was indeed interesting. Chris described what might happen over the next couple of years. Long distance rail service may be extended to Brunswick. Then service on the Rockland branch could connect Wiscasset to Brunswick and the Amtrak Downeaster. There is a company proposing the use of BUDD cars, self-propelled commuter cars, to provide this service along with commuter service to employers like BIW. There is also the possibility of excursion trains returning. Excursion trains could also connect to cruise boats for rail and sail tours for tourists. Another possible type of train is the cruise train. These are similar to cruise ships, only the ship, in this case, is a luxury train car. They are currently operating in Maine and usually originate in Montreal. Chris ended his talk by mentioning that the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railroad Museum expects to complete its line from Sheepscot to Alna Center by 2004. Then it is possible that they could build south to Wiscasset. Narrow gauge and regular railroads in Wiscasset once again? Awesome! Train travel has always fascinated me. But I was also one of those who thought the Downeaster would not do well after the initial curiosity and novelty of the train to Boston wore off. I've ridden long distance, commuter and excursion trains. I haven't ridden on a cruise train but I did look into the one operating out of Montreal. Expensive, but it looked like it would be a fabulous trip. Could it be that rail service is coming back? Is it an old idea retrofitted to solve new problems? Retro does seem to be the in thing. I even have a retro car. Could it be that old is good? That old ideas, designs and solutions are valuable? Does that extend to old folks too? There was a good turn out for the Family Breakfast last Saturday. Close to 70 people came in for a bountiful breakfast even though the Touch-the-Trucks event had to be canceled because of the morning rain. The breakfast was the idea of our chef, Barbara Chubbuck. There were eggs, sausage, pancakes, corn beef hash, yogurt, orange juice, toast, and coffeecake. Thanks to all the volunteers: Barbara Chubbuck, the Bridghams, Grondins, Woodworths, Gilliams, Barbara Haggett and Tony Gatti. And of course all these volunteers could not have done such a good job if not for the overall supervision given by Marion Chubbuck. Activities For The Week: (Reservations Please!
