Carol E. Campbell Carol Elaine (Brown-Hyson) Campbell, 69, of Boothbay died January 16 following a long illness following heart surgery. Born December 27, 1933 in Solon, she was the daughter of Leland and Freeda Brown. She graduated from Wiscasset High School in 1952, then married Gerald Hyson of East Boothbay and became an American Red Cross swimming instructor while raising three children. Later in her life she became a nurse's aide at St. Andrews Hospital where she met and married Irving Campbell of Boothbay. They spent 35 years of their lives together. Mrs. Campbell will always be remembered for her love of gardening and making of homemade applesauce, pickles, breads, and spaghetti sauce. She enjoyed family get-togethers, riding the "trike" with her husband, and going to the VFW where she enjoyed dancing and the company of friends. She was predeceased by her father, Leland Brown, who died in October 1989, and her young sister, Dona F. Spencer, who died in May 1999. Survivors include her husband, Irving C. Campbell of Boothbay; two daughters, Lucinda E. Hyson of Southport and Michelle H. Farnham and her husband, Fred, of Boothbay Harbor; one son, Maurice L. Hyson of Edgecomb; her mother, Freeda C. Brown of Wiscasset; her brother, Basil C. Brown and his wife, Carol, of Cape Elizabeth; two stepdaughters, Vicki Arsenault and husband, Barry, of Edgecomb and Deborah Spear and her husband, William, of Boothbay; one stepson, Thomas Campbell and his wife, Belinda, of Boothbay Harbor; seven grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. There will be no services held for Mrs. Campbell per her request, however, there will be a celebration of her life with family and close friends at alater date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to theLincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556. Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay. Dorothy V. Gaecklein Dorothy V. Gaecklein, 83, died Sunday, January 19 at her home in Boothbay Harbor. She was born April 19, 1919 in Queens, N.Y., the daughter of E. Austin and Grace Murray Virden. She grew up in the Bronx and moved to North Jersey in the early 1930s. She graduated from Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne, N.J. in 1936. In 1940 she married Demestre "John" Ritchie. She started work as a hairdresser, then she began to run Ritchie Insurance and Real Estate with her husband. In 1967, her husband died shortly after she sold the business and relocated to Southport, Maine. In the late 1970s, she married John Gaecklein. She enjoyed fishing and camping with her husband and she loved gardening, needlepoint, arts and crafts and animals. She was predeceased by her husband, John Gaecklein, Jr. in 1991, and her son, Robert Ritchie in 1961. Survivors include her sons, Donald J. Ritchie of Hawthorne, N.J. and Alan D. Ritchie of Warwick, N.Y.; one daughter, Jeanne Mahlstedt of Pompano, Fla.; two stepsons, David Gaecklein of Boothbay Harbor and Ken Gaecklein of Edgecomb; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 23 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mrs. Gaecklein memory to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.
