A local pharmacy is participating in a new program that will
save Medicare patients money on prescription medication.
Waltz Pharmacies in Wiscasset, Boothbay Harbor, Waldoboro, and
Damariscotta are implementing a program called Together Rx.
Together Rx is a national prescription savings program that
"provides savings to eligible Medicare enrollees on more than
150 widely prescribed medicines," according to a brochure
published by Together Rx.
Started in June 2002, it is being implemented in pharmacies
around Maine. Each pharmacy will offer a minimum of 15% savings
on the listed medicines and in many cases will save 40% or more
on prescription drugs.
Together Rx is available for approximately 11 million Medicare
enrollees who do not have prescription drug coverage.
"Together Rx provides an opportunity for qualified seniors to
save money on medications that they might not normally get
filled because of income limitations," said Pharmacist Paul
Treworgy.
Individuals enrolled in Medicare and making less than $28,000 a
year or any couple making less than $38,000 annual income will
qualify.
Members of Together Rx will receive a card signifying that they
are participating in this plan. It is not an insurance or credit
card: the savings are available at the pharmacy counter as soon
as the card is received.
Together RX was founded by several pharmaceutical companies,
including Abbott Laboratories, Bristol-Myers, Squibb, Novartis,
and Ortho-Mc Neil.
According to the brochure, these companies are "committed to
providing seniors and other eligible Medicare participants with
broader access to savings on many medications, with the
convenience of one card."
Some of the 150 medications included in the Together Rx Card
include: Amoxil, Diabeta, Flonase, Lamisil, Mycelex, Paxil,
Valtrex and Zantac. These prescription drugs "treat over 20
diseases that are most common among senior citizens," says Lisa
Clifford, Marketing Director for Waltz.
