Cushman Point Road Tabled Again
Paula Gibbs
Wiscasset selectmen decided to table for the second time a request from a group of property owners to accept the Cushman Point Road as a town road Tuesday night. The request was tabled in November, pending a site visit by town manager and former town engineer David Kinney. Kinney said he looked at the road in December. Kinney told selectmen he had four concerns - one of them being the fact that there is no "crown" or raised section in the middle of the road in certain sections. Doug Smith told selectmen the road built by the developer was done to town specs at the time. Selectman Roy Barnes said he's more concerned about the original dirt road that leads to the subdivision than the one the developer built. Selectman Steve Jarrett said he's concerned that "the town might have to pay the cost of bringing it up to town standards." After about 45 minutes of discussion, selectman Mike Blagdon said, "This is an issue that should go before the town." Selectmen agreed to table it to see if some agreement can be worked out between the property owners and the town on how it should be presented at town meeting. Todd Souza New Rec Director Todd Souza, who accepted the job with the town as assistant recreation department director about two months ago, was unanimously named director of the department and the Wiscasset Community Center Tuesday night. The former director, Wayne Applebee is now the chief deputy at the Lincoln County Sheriff's office. Guidelines Forwarded Selectmen decided to forward to the town's new comprehensive planning committee a set of transportation guidelines developed by the town's transportation committee. The guidelines were adapted from guidelines suggested by the Maine Department of Transportation. The selectmen discussed whether they should "accept" or "endorse" the guidelines, but eventually decided to simply forward them on to the committee. A sticking point for selectman Mike Blagdon was the reference to connecting local streets. Bill On Sheriff's Costs Kinney announced that he has met with State Rep. Peter Rines about introducing a bill that would change the way Wiscasset is billed for county services. The idea stemmed from a visit by County Sheriff Todd Brackett during his campaign, when he suggested that towns that have their own police departments should be eligible for a different funding structure. Department Head Meetings Ambulance Service Director Sherry Foster asked if the selectmen could return to the practice of having department heads meet with selectmen on a regular basis. Kinney said he recommends the current practice of department heads just reporting directly to him be continued. John Blagdon asked if it is true there are plans to make the ambulance service a separate entity. Kinney said there has been some "misinformation" about the matter. The town just wants the service to be self-supporting, he said, but there are no plans to separate it from the town. Blagdon said the service already is self-supporting. Budget Workshop A budget workshop will be held on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 5:30 p.m. Dog Licenses Due Town clerk Sandra Johnson has announced that dog licenses are due this month. Shellfish Warden Named Michael Smith was named the town's shellfish warden. |
