Robert DeWick Recreation Area Will Open To Duck Hunters

Charlotte Boynton

The Robert DeWick Recreation Area will allow small boats with motors up to 15 horsepower to use its boat ramp from October 1 through December 31.

The Woolwich selectmen had asked the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Marine Resources (DMR) to modify the original permit which did not allow motorized boats to be launched in the recreational area because of the shortnose sturgeon population.

The selectmen requested the change because the shortnose sturgeon are only there during the summer months.

According to the letter from DMR, the department has done extensive sampling in that area of Pleasant Cove, and found the sturgeon to be present as late as mid November.

Although DMR concluded that allowing the traditional use of the ramp for duck hunting with small motorized boats from October through December should not result in any additional mortality or disturbance to the sturgeon than was traditionally encountered, the boats can not use the ramp until November 16.

"DMR would not be opposed to allowing small boats to be carried in from October 1 to November 15," George Lapointe, Commissioner of DMR, said in his letter. "Roadway/ramp blocking plugs could not be removed until November 16." Fire Station, Municipal Building Expansion The selectmen will meet with the Woolwich Town Office Expansion Committee Monday, January 27, at 5:30 to discuss a preliminary design proposal for expansion of the fire station and the municipal building.

Paul Seaman of Design Bank in Woolwich presented the proposal.

Seaman has been a resident of Woolwich for the past five years, and is a licensed architect in the state of Maine and in Massachusetts. Baker Property

Selectman David King told the board Philip Baker has offered to sell the land directly across from the municipal building, on the corner of Nequasset Road and Route 1.

"It would be in the town's best interest to own that piece of land," King said.

The selectmen will meet with Baker Monday, January 27, at 5 p.m. to discuss the price.

If the selectmen and Baker agree on the cost of the property, an article could be on the town warrant to purchase the land. Regional Collection Day

Woolwich will join with Bath to have a Regional Collection Day for televisions, and computer monitors.

The Bath Deputy Director of Public Works, Lee Leiner invited the town to participate in a one-time, one-day, regional collection day for these items.

Leiner told the selectmen the residents would have to pay a fee for the televisions and monitors to be disposed. The event is being planned for the spring, around Earth Day, according to Leiner.

Residents who have these items will take them to the Bath Landfill, where they will be stored, either in a truck or building until a disposal/recycling company comes to pick them up. Upcoming Meetings

The selectmen will have a full agenda Monday, January 27, at 5 p.m when they will meet with Phil Baker on purchasing a piece of property; at 5:30 p.m. they will meet with Paul Seaman regarding the expansion of the municipal building and at 6 p.m. they will meet with Neil Courtney to discuss the Fire Department apparatus needs.

On February 3, the selectmen will hold a budget workshop at 5 p.m. At 5:30 they will continue with Susan and Jackson Parker's abatement application hearing.

Their regular selectmen's meeting will be held at 6 p.m.
