Joe Piccirillo, of Wiscasset was surprised last week when his
blind, nine-year-old Samoyed, Nakita, who suffers from sugar
diabetes, found a baby turkey in his backyard and carried it in
his mouth to his dog crate where he gingerly laid it down.
Piccirillo wasn't sure what kind of an animal it was at first,
and thought perhaps it was dead. However, when he took a second
look, the animal moved, and he discovered it was a baby turkey.
He removed the animal from the crate, and took the baby turkey
to the Damariscotta Veterinarian Clinic, where his wife, Dee,
works to have the animal checked out.
The turkey was found to be in good health and was adopted by
Dr. Christine Welch, a veterinarian who is licensed to care for
wild animals.
