Roland Bailey To Receive Award
The Woolwich Historical Society announced this week that
Woolwich native Roland Bailey has been selected as the
organization's first recipient of the Distinguished Service
Award.
"Mr. Bailey has made a significant contribution to the mission
of the Society - to preserve our local heritage and to educate
the community and others about Woolwich history," a press
release from the organization said.
"Roland Bailey is renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of
the genealogy of Woolwich families and for his willingness to
share his vast knowledge with others. He is extremely generous
in giving his time and energy to researchers (both local and
from away) who are looking into their Woolwich roots.'
"Anyone who has had the pleasure of working with Mr. Bailey
knows how knowledgeable and helpful he is. In addition, he
contributed to the writing of History of Woolwich, Maine, A Town
Remembered,'' the Society's 1994 book, and writes the Roots'
page for The Woolwich Times.
"Over many years, Mr. Bailey has been a tireless volunteer,
serving in numerous capacities, including museum guide, board
member, and on practically every committee."
The award will be presented at the Society's annual dinner on
November 1 at the Taste of Maine Restaurant on Route 1 in
Woolwich. Tickets are $25 per person and can be obtained by
calling Annie Miller at 442-9065 or Bruce McElman at 443-9781.
The Woolwich Historical Society is dedicated to the
preservation of local Woolwich heritage and maintains a museum
located at the intersection of Route 1 and Nequasset Road in
Woolwich. The museum is open in the summer (July-August), for
special events, and by appointment.
The Society also presents quarterly programs with speakers on
local history, publishes a quarterly newsletter, "The Woolwich
Times," and runs various educational programs for youth,
including its "Living History Day Camp" in July.
