"Majority" Means We Want Them Dear Editor: Is anyone else out there tired of listening to our self-appointed Westport Island watchdogs? Well I sure am. The Board of Selectmen, who are trying to run our town in a positive and intelligent manner, were voted in by a majority vote. Now just in case you watchdogs don't understand "majority," it means that most of us want them there! You few individuals who obviously don't want them there need to get on with your life and let them to the job we elected them to do. I have a hard time believing you don't have more important things to do with your time and money than trying to find something wrong with every decision the selectmen make. As one who helped to put our selectmen in office, I have all the confidence in the world they are doing the very best they can for our town. You few people with big wallets and even bigger egos who think you have all the right answers for Westport Island, whether it be rental property or fire trucks, need to look elsewhere to expend your energies. I for one am tired of all the negativity you bring to the table, not to mention the money you are going to cost us with legal fees and law suits. If you truly believe we are so dysfunctional as a town, do me a favor, don't try to "fix" us. I am sure you can find someplace more suitable. The last time I checked, the Westport Island Bridge accommodated the traffic in both directions. Gary Webber Westport Island In Appreciation Of Good Friends Dear Editor: On August 16 our sons Skip and Doug were in a very horrible car accident. We would like to thank all our wonderful friends for all of your love and support and words of encouragement to us as we were dealing with a very bad situation. The boys are healing. They will be okay. Saturday, August 21 was the first anniversary of our son Dan's accident. Rob Pontau, Dan's wonderful friend, decided to build a disc golf course on his property in Durham in memory of Dan and to hold a disc golf tournament on that Saturday to raise money for the Daniel Leeman Scholarship Fund. All of Rob's family, lots of his friends joined in and they raised $1,579 for the scholarship fund. Adam Newcomb won the first place trophy. A wonderful group of people in Boothbay Harbor, who could not attend the tournament, also collected money for the scholarship fund and raised $670. What fantastic friends we have to do so many wonderful things for us during these past two weeks! Much love to all, Nancy and Alton Wyman |
