Pownalborough Courthouse 18th Century History Event

Peggy Shiels

The Lincoln County Historical Association will host a major 18th Century Living History Event on September 11-12 at the 1761 Pownalborough Courthouse in Dresden, the only pre-Revolutionary War courthouse remaining in Maine. The encampment is sponsored in part by McGaffery's Creek Restorations, New Harbor. The Pownalborough Courthouse is located on Route 128 in Dresden, off Route 27. The public is invited to attend. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for children.

This large, outdoor, interpretive event will include over a hundred re-enactors representing local settlers and militia, members of British and French military units, Native Americans and artisans. Visitors will see demonstrations of camp life and trading, military exercises, music and magic. The event will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, and close at 4 p.m. that day. Sunday's public schedule begins at 9 a.m. and will end at 1 p.m.

"It is about ten years before the American Revolution, and as the center of justice for the shire and the largest building for miles, Pownalborough Courthouse is hosting a regular seasonal gathering for everyone in the area. The Indian wars have ended and people are looking for times of peace and a return to farming, socializing, trading and raising their families, but old tensions and new resentments were simmering just below the surface of everyday life." says Peggy Shiels, Executive Director of the Lincoln County Historical Association.

Also featured will be lectures by noted historians, including talks on the forts along the Kennebec and the men who accompanied Benedict Arnold on his march through the area to Quebec. Special tours of the historic St. John's Church on Route 27 in Dresden will be offered at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12 for interested visitors and re-enactors. The church served the parish of Jacob Bailey, the first Anglican missionary to the area and a classmate of John Adams.

Anyone interested in participating in the encampment as a re-enactor should contact Gus Konitsky, McGaffery's Creek Restorations, 233 Huddle Road, New Harbor, ME 04554.

Pownalborough Courthouse is on Route 128, 2.7 miles from Route 27 and 1.3 miles from the junction of Routes 197 and 128. Regular museum hours are Tuesday - Saturday in July and August, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Saturdays in September, 10 a.m. 4 p.m.. Regular admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children.
