Wiscasset Senior Citizens

Jo Bryer

OB Here it is - September first, and already there is a lot going on behind closed doors at the Community Center as Todd and Bobby crack the whip to get the annual "housecleaning" done in time to re-open for their fall schedule starting Tuesday, the 7th.

Now please take note -- the Senior Center programs resume Wednesday, September 8 starting with the regular community social hour and dinner, followed by the usual Thursday lunch and Bingo, Friday Crafty Knitters and of course Monday lunches again from here on in.

We'll be announcing the starting date for the new Cribbage players club - set up for beginners, refreshers and already'' players. Also we will be encouraging those who don't want to eat and run' every Wednesday to stay for a bit and enjoy fun cards, board games or just socialize some more after dinner. If you're interested, let us know.

You could cut chef Barbara's delicious Roast Pork with a fork last Wednesday! She sure does a great job with all the meals she works so hard to put on for us week after week. So every time she holds the winning 50-50 ticket, as was the case again this week, she gets a big hand from appreciative patrons.

It seems we have a great WSC supporter in Dave Nichols who buys a string of 50-50 tickets and promptly gives them all to Barbara! Applause, applause for that kind of generosity.

While we're handing out kudos, we must thank Bonnie Blagden and Natalie Demeny at the desk in the lobby for setting up and printing raffle tickets and flyers for the various fund raisers we have held. We appreciate you both more than you know!

We also need to thank Pat and Earl Dighton for cashiering for September. Beverly and Glidden Tyler have signed in for October. Must have had fun in August doing that job! Belated thanks to Dave and Sharon Nichols, Lin and Peg Simmons and all the others who have taken over this same job Wednesdays in the past.

Please note in the newsletter (back of menu sheet) that Joanna Bardo's family donated $100 to the chair fund as a special recognition of her August 24th birthday. 49 and holding! Hope you had a great one, Joanna! See you in the fall if not sooner!

The Trustees chose Pat Greene as the Volunteer for the Month of September. To clarify - this is someone who has volunteered consistently for some time to help with the many things needing to be done, not just during that particular month. Our thank you'' is in the form of a free dinner ticket to that person(s).

We all look forward to retirement days. Often when they arrive, the pleasure can soon turn to boredom. That's when one needs to become involved - so why not volunteer for something before the ole rockin' chair gets you. Our volunteers are always greatly appreciated and have made our Senior Center what it is today.

The Senior Center Anniversary Party takes place twice - first, Monday, Sept. 13 and then on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

On Monday, it's lobster for members only - price $5. Must be ordered and paid for no later than Thurs. Sept. 9. Other diners for lunch will have hot dogs at $4.

On Wednesday the 22nd, it's Lobster Dinner -- $10 for all or hot dogs at $6. You must make reservations. We will be entertaining Chief Mike Emmons and Sergeant Murphy for this occasion.

One of the great up-coming programs this fall is the AARP sponsored "Drivers' Ed" program. We'll have date and cost soon. Must say, John and I took this course twice in Florida and continue to receive a safe driver" discount on our insurance. It is a fun course, you don't have finals'' -- in fact we corrected our own test papers -- and you learn many safety tips so important to older people about driving in today's fast traffic. It's easy to highly recommend this program for everyone.

Our new Activities Committee chairman, George Greene, is already collecting names for those interested in an Isle of Shoals cruise.More on this soon.

There is a Senior Spectrum Veterans' Advocates program about veterans' benefits coming in late October. More on this soon also.

Wednesday at commercial time,'' Doc reminded diners that the Senior Center's goal - among other things - is to be a place where everyone -- but everyone - feels free to come have lunch, make new friends (we all need them), or stop by for cards or just sit and visit, or join the ladies who meet Friday mornings to do all sorts of hand work.

We try to arrange programs that are free or within everyone's pocketbook. If transportation is a problem, we always try to accommodate those in real need. A phone call to Doc Schilke or one of the trustees will put the wheels in motion.

The after Labor Day menus: Wednesday, Sept. 8, baked chicken breast dinner after social hour with hors d'oeurves 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Thurs., Sept. 9, tuna or egg salad roll followed by Bingo. Don't forget to sign up and pay up this day if you want lobster at Monday, Sept. 13 Anniversary Party.Menu sheets for the month of September now available.

That's it for now.
