Stewards Hold Election
John Reinhardt
The Stewards of the Sheepscot (SOS), a community-based organization with members from Wiscasset, Alna, Westport and Edgecomb, are pleased to announce the election of Gwenn de Mauriac and John Reinhardt as co-presidents for 2004-2005. The mission of the SOS is "to ensure the well-planned, sustainable growth of Wiscasset, its waterfront and the Sheepscot River basin consistent with preserving the health, safety and welfare of the community, the Sheepscot and its ecosystem." SOS was able to successfully mount a defense against Dragon Cement making the Sheepscot and the Wiscasset harbor a sea/rail head for its 2004 cement transfer and production activities. Following this success the Stewards of the Sheepscot were instrumental in bringing Connecticut based National Resources into Wiscasset to purchase the Mason Station and adjoining properties for environmental and community based development. Members of SOS, subsequent to a successful non-binding petition signed by 888 citizens, went ahead with a binding referendum to change the Wiscasset zoning laws to limit structures exceeding 35 feet in height to land used solely for industrial purposes. SOS has supported, both publicly and privately, the continued development of the all-important comprehensive plan for Wiscasset through direct membership on the committee, developing the plan, and press releases stressing the importance of finishing the project for Wiscasset. In May of 2004, the Stewards of the Sheepscot and the Wiscasset Newspaper joined forces in hosting a question and answer evening at the Wiscasset Middle School for citizens of Wiscasset. A series of questions was formulated for the candidates running for the three open positions of selectmen. This evening proved to be an effective way to learn about nominees for important town positions and how they would perform their duties. One of SOS's principal goals for 2004/2005 is to be a proactive, independent watchdog, information clearinghouse and voice for the region, the river and all inhabitants through the development of an inclusive vision, to affect and influence priority ordinance improvements, and to encourage and support a planning strategy for the waterfront and the Sheepscot's preservation and marine use. Meetings of the Stewards of the Sheepscot will be held on the first Wednesday of each month.Next scheduled meeting will be held in Edgecomb on Wednesday, October 6 at 7 p.m. The place of the meeting will be announced in a future press release. |
