Condolences Dear Editor, I would like to give my condolences to Karl Tarbox for the way his fellow selectmen treated him during the secret meeting. I think it's pretty ironic that the chairman of the board said they couldn't talk about it, when everyone in town knew what happened by the next day. He got sandbagged, and some people knew he was going to get sandbagged even before the meeting. So what if he read some letters at the town hall. They weren't marked secret, but that's what Wiscasset always wants, do it in secret and tell the people when it's too late for them to do anything about it. I'm glad I don't live in the town any- more. Rod Johnson Edgecomb Donated Labor, Materials Provide Edgecomb With Free Addition Editor's note: The Edgecomb Fire Department has recently completed a 34 foot by 16 foot addition to the fire station to house a new International 2005 Class A pumper tanker. The addition comes at no cost to the taxpayers. The new truck was purchased with a grant from the federal government with a ten percent match from the taxpayers. Dear Editor: The Edgecomb Fire Department wishes to thank the many people who gave support in building the new addition to the fire station. We greatly appreciate the support of the entire town on this project. Special thanks for the groundwork go to Robert (Hen) Townsend, John Markowski, Eric Wood and Harry Crooker & Company. The many people we wish to thank include: Richard Spinney and Frazer Concrete who did the floor and footings; Ames Supply; N.C. Hunt; Poole Brothers; and Home Depot who furnished the building supplies. Former Fire Chief Steve Dowdy and AMP-Co supplied the electrical wiring for the new addition. Mike Smith with hammer extraordinaire over saw the building of this new bay. Bar Clark, Steven Burke and Peter Tedford gave generously of their time. John Pagurko's staging was greatly appreciated and expedited our endeavor. Lee's Door provided installation of the overhead door. The Edgecomb Fire Department Auxiliary through cash donations, boot drives, bottle redemption, and dinners by the Congregational Church of Edgecomb, paid for this addition. Our new 2000-gallon tanker will be arriving within two weeks and will occupy this new addition. Thank you all who made this possible! Barry Johnston Edgecomb Fire/EMS Chief Sorry To Hear Karl Resigned Dear Editor: It has been with much regret that we heard of Karl Tarbox's resignation from the Wiscasset Board of Selectmen. Our family and many other people were impressed enough with his extensive knowledge of town and state government to vote him onto the board, and it is a great pity to lose him. Karl has always approached town problems with good insight and vision for what is in the best interest of the town not his own, but our town's. He has called it like it is despite special interest groups or those with a personal axe to grind. The rare times he has been wrong, he has been quick to acknowledge it, and publicly via the newspapers. The major point: for once, we had a majority of selectmen on the board who had served on the budget committee, crunched the numbers and therefore understood how we must budget the lesser amount of monies we now have coming in so as to keep us out of that red column! That very fact gave me hope that these two bodies for once would now be able to support each others' recommendations on spending our tax dollars come town meeting time. We hope that whoever fills Karl's seat on the board will be able to put personal feelings aside and work only, as he did, for the best interest of Wiscasset. Now is not the time to try to go back to the old way of doing business. We have three very capable men on board, all with good track records. With their efforts and our cooperation we will rise up out of the ashes of losing Maine Yankee's tax money. I am excited about Wiscasset's future! Jo Bryer Wiscasset Too One-Sided Dear Editor: I was shocked and disgusted to read the completely one-sided article on page 7, called "Midcoast Chamber Name Change Controversy.'' If this was written by a reporter, how come he or she did not get the other side of the story from the people at the Bath-Brunswick Chamber or as it is now called, the Midcoast Maine Chamber? If it was a press release, then why didn't you say it was a press release, and say who wrote it? You're supposed to be a newspaper, not a NEWSLETTER. There is a really big difference which you people don't get. Now, you should write a REAL story, getting comments from both sides! I am looking forward to getting a better balanced view of what's going on here, so I hope you will write the story for next week's paper. Andrea Grover Edgecomb Editor's Note: The writer of the article was Jaimie Kleinstiver at the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce. The writer raises a valid point. The article should have been run as a commentary on the editorial page. |
