Latest Plans For Maritime Village to Be Unveiled Nov.
A public workshop to update the community on plans to redevelop the Mason Station is set for Wednesday, November 10 at 7 p.m. at the Wiscasset Middle School. The meeting will be hosted by Point East, a subsidiary of National RE/sources, the Greenwich, Conn. based company which purchased the defunct generating plant and 33 acres of land from FPL Energy last December. Point East is the name chosen by National RE/sources for the redevelopment of both the Mason Station and Maine Yankee, the state's only nuclear power plant which closed in 1997. National RE/sources purchased 441 acres of land, part of the original 800 acres of land owned by Maine Yankee, last summer to develop a technology park. Next week's meeting is a followup to a community meeting held last March when plans for a maritime village at the Mason Station were discussed, according to a press release from Point East. "We're very excited to share the last eight months of our planning efforts for the maritime village with Wiscasset and the surrounding community," said Joseph Cotter, owner of National RE/sources and president of Point East. "We were delighted with the breadth and creativity of the many ideas brought to us during our first public workshop last March," Cotter said. Don Alexander, the town's director of economic development, said he is "very privileged" to provide assistance to the project, which he calls a "landmark development in the town's history." "Wiscasset is incredibly fortunate to have a development partner who not only has a vision for what may be, but also a deep sense of commitment to the existing character of the community and its downtown," Alexander said. "I believe the citizens of Wiscasset are going to be very, very pleased with this vision, which they have helped to create," he said. Project manager Scott Houldin said, "One of the greatest aspects of this project is the incredible support and direct involvement of the community. The end result will be something that members of the community can proudly say they helped to create." Light refreshments will be provided and all members of the public are welcome to attend.
