When you see boiled dinner on the menu at the Wednesday community dinner, it means fall has really arrived and to the point that it is November already! Regardless, that type of feed is one of the old favorites. A good crowd attended and Sherry Westfall was the happy winner of the 50-50 draw. For the first time, Wednesday members were called to an after dinner membership meeting by Trustee Board Chairman, Doc Schilke. Heretofore, the first Monday each month lunch people held a membership meeting while Wednesday members never got to know how things were going. Now every fourth Wednesday, members get the same update. Doc, who does a super job keeping our accounts in control and accurately recorded, gave a resume of our financial standing, stating that proceeds from the community dinners are going a long way toward lessening our reliance on the town. Fund raisers of all sorts are allowing us to pay for capital improvements in our quarters rather than up' our budget requests. All in all we are in good shape financially and our record keeping methods are excellent. And our Town Fathers agree! Doc asked for volunteers to help with some of the committees not yet chaired. If you have the time, talk with Doc. It is the great volunteering that goes on that makes our center successful. Entertainment chairman, George Greene, circulated a survey to see what kind of activities, programs or possibly tours people are interested in. He also could use some help, so volunteers please step up to the plate and let's get things rolling! One of the directors of the scholarship fund gave a brief report on the state of that project which is going very well. The reserves are steadily building and we can look forward to awarding another scholarship this coming June. It would be nice to think we might do more than the one! The most urgent problem that must be solved is hiring a suitable cook to replace our beloved chef Barbara who will be retiring in the spring. We will be advertising for this position right away so the new cook can work for a few weeks with Barbara as the transition is made. The trustees hope to contract the job out to a person who can work happily with the various volunteers who assist in the kitchen. There is a comprehensive job description available for the cook's position as well as the job description for the dishwasher and clean up crew. These are available to anyone interested in the position by contacting Doc Schilke (call him at 882-5241), or talk with him at any one of the regular meal times. Housekeeping chair, Pat Jarrett, is quickly proving her worth, and also donated a large quantity of placemats. Many thanks, Pat. In this same vein, we need to acknowledge with thanks the contributions of paper napkins and coffee cups that come regularly from Hannaford's in Damariscotta. We appreciate all these donations and put them to good use. Speaking of donations, the Crafty Knitters were given a big bag of yarns. Nat at the lobby desk carefully wrote down the donor's name and stuck it to the bag. Somehow that got misplaced. The only thing we know is the lady came from Dresden. If she will contact Jo Bryer at 882-9252 we would like to thank her. And our thanks to all other yarn donors. The yarn will come in handy as we knit for the mitten tree. In this regard, if there are any other knitters who would like to pick up a skein for hats or scarves or mittens for the tree, or our Christmas basket for a deserving family, please do come in. There is plenty to choose from. A thank you' to the library book store for the volumes added to our bookshelves. We hope people will look them over and feel free to take out for reading. Incidentally, it was nice to have a couple of new faces at Friday's Crafty Knitters. One of these ladies joined Carolann's quilting department, while the other settled in with a large crocheted afghan she is working on. It is always a pleasant morning when these hand crafters meet.Come give us a try any time. Tuesday morning cribbage club is off and running a relaxed and fun morning, open to all. November menus and newsletters are out: Thurs., Nov. 4, smothered beef followed by bingo and Mon., Nov. 8, liver and onions. That's it for now |
