Girls Limit Lisbon, Edge Mt. Abram

Ryan Thompson

After a slow start by Wiscasset, the girls varsity team (10-4) overtook a weak Lisbon team (1-14) on the way to a 45-24 home court win on Monday night.

They also narrowly beat a stronger Mt. Abram team (9-5) last Saturday.

Both Wiscasset and Lisbon got off to a sluggish start to begin the quarter. After several missed opportunities Lisbon got the ball rolling with a long range two pointer by Zoe Turcotte.

Wiscasset struggled to score as Lisbon did a good job guarding the ball handler to deny shots and force turnovers. Lisbon's Angie Estes stole the ball to set up an easy basket by Turcotte.

"We were ragged. It was not one of our better games," said coach Tim Flanagan.

Wiscasset tried to get into an offensive rhythm on their outside shots as well, but missed some three-point opportunities.

The team's first offense came from the inside as Sarah Whitfield fed a pass to Amanda Davis. She got open in the inside post area with a quick move to shake her defender to score the team's first basket after four minutes.

After Whitfield added a foul shot to cut the Lisbon lead to three points, Colby Graffam added another free throw to trim the deficit to one point.

But it was Lisbon who had the slight advantage as Gabrielle Mathieu drove to the hoop and Estes added a foul shot to increase the lead to four.

The Lady Redskins struggled as Lisbon anticipated Wiscasset's passes to deny their chances to tie the game.

"We were uptight. We weren't intense or focused enough. Our passes weren't crisp," Flanagan said.

Davis hit two more three throws and had a nice block, while Maryellen Buck had a rebound, but they could not rally against the lower-ranked Greyhounds.

After Flanagan briefly talked over the first quarter with his team, the girls began to play with more intensity and took over the game completely. The girls' defense swarmed around Lisbon, limiting the Greyhounds to just one point in the second quarter.

After a couple of turnovers by Lisbon and one by the home team, Whitfield threw a quick pass to Davis for a mid range basket to tie the game at eight points each.

After a bad pass and turnover by Lisbon, Davis hit an offensive rebound to give Wiscasset its first lead of the game. From there, the girls never came close to giving up their lead as they continued to stifle the Lisbon shooters.

Davis blocked another Lisbon shot, Sheena Pinkham grabbed the rebound on their second attempt and tossed the ball to Whitfield. She drove to the basket, missed the shot but followed on the shot with a strong move to the hoop to get the second chance basket.

After Megan Foye caught an errant Lisbon pass, she got the ball to Whitfield for a three pointer to give the girls a 15-9 lead.

Soleil Mathieu scored Lisbon's only point on the next play, hitting one of two foul shot attempts.

The period ended as Whitfield and Davis each hit a free throw to close the quarter with a 17-9 lead.

Wiscasset continued to run away with the game as Davis blocked a shot that led to a Whitfield basket to start the quarter. She hit her second three of the night to add to their lead.

The girls did a good job making quicker and better passes as the game went on, and Lisbon was unable to intercept them the way they did in the first quarter. "In the second and third quarter we started getting shots on the weak side of the basket. They were there all night, but we didn't start getting them until the third quarter," he said.

The next basket came on a well-timed out-of-bounds play. Buck passed the ball to an open Davis who dribbled a few steps and made the shot. On the next play Davis blocked the shooter and tossed a cross court pass to Whitfield for an easy two. Wiscasset lead 26-9 with under three minutes left in the third frame.

After Mathieu scored on three of four foul shots, Buck scored the final bucket of the quarter on a feed from Whitfield.

Valerie Siegel stole the ball but was fouled before she took a shot. From there Wiscasset took several quick shots as the time ticked away, but none found the mark.

Although Lisbon scored its highest point total of the game in the last quarter, 13 points, it was not enough to stop Wiscasset, which scored 17 points on their way to a 45-24 win.

Janet Reed stepped up in a big way as she scored all of her 13 points in the final quarter to power the offense.

"She got passes on the weak side. She did an awesome job coming off the bench," Flanagan said.

Davis set up an open basket for Reed and fed her again two plays later to give Wiscasset a 32-17 lead. After Soleil Mathieu hit a basket to close the gap by two points, Reed converted a three-point play to give Wiscasset its largest lead of the game.

As time ticked away in the quarter the Lisbon players tried to get back into the game by taking quick outside shots and struggled to run their plays under a stronger Wiscasset defense.

Davis made a three point play, Whitfield hit a foul shot and Mandi Auvil forced a turnover to further frustrate Lisbon at the end of the game.

"It was good to get out of that one with a victory, said Flanagan. "We adjusted well to their defense."

Whitfield led all scoring with 15 points while Davis added 14 for Wiscasset. Soleil Mathieu and Turcotte had seven points each for Lisbon.

The girls won a defensive battle earlier in the week, beating a stubborn Mount Abram defense 37-34 last Saturday night.

Both teams were evenly matched to start the game as Wiscasset took a one point lead after eight minutes. Sarah Whitfield scored five points and Matzell added two more in the first quarter to keep things close.

Although Wiscasset scored seven points again in the second quarter, it wasn't enough to keep even with the Roadrunners. Mount Abram outscored their opponents by three points to lead 16-14 at the half.

Reed scored a basket, Whitfield added a three pointer while Buck and Davis added a foul shot each to help the team.

Wiscasset pulled away in the decisive third quarter, outscoring Mount Abram 13-8 to lead by three with eight minutes left to play. Pinkham scored all of her points in this quarter, making a bucket and three pointer to lead the third frame offense.

Davis scored eight out of the team's 10 points in the final quarter to help Wiscasset match their opponents offensive output to preserve the win.

Davis led her team with 11 points 10 rebounds and five steals. Whitfield also scored 10 points for Wiscasset.

Graffam also scored a basket and grabbed eight rebounds while Buck contributed three points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Logahn Walker led Mount Abram with 10 points, Brianna Wilkins added 9 and Emily Stinchfield scored 7 points for Mount Abram.
