The girls' varsity basketball team defeated George's Valley 45-38 in a hard fought game February 9 in their final regular season game.

Sarah Whitfield and Amanda Davis provided the offense for Wiscasset in the first quarter, each scoring six points a piece.

With 1:20 left to play in the quarter George's Valley's Elena Bertocci gave her team an 11-8 point lead. The lead diminished when Davis scored on her own offensive rebound. Wiscasset led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams had problems passing and shooting in the second quarter. The two teams managed to score only three points a piece during the first four minutes. Davis scored with 3:40 left in the half to end Wiscasset's scoring drought. Wiscasset maintained a three point lead at the half.

With 3:05 left in the third quarter Kim Watts of George's Valley tied the game at 27.

Colby Graffam hit two foul shots with 27 seconds left, giving Wiscasset a 33-31 lead.

On George's Valley next possession they lost the ball to Whitfield, who scored on her own steal, giving Wiscasset a four point lead going into the fourth quarter.

George's Valley had their own scoring problems in the fourth quarter. It took over four minutes for Ashley Geel to score Georges' Valley first basket of the final quarter.

With 2:18 left to play, George's Valley coach, Roger Porter was hit for a technical foul when he argued a three second violation. Davis hit one of the two shots.

Felicia Wade and Meghan Foye scored back to back baskets for Wiscasset to seal a Wiscasset win. Whitfield stole the ball at the end of the game and was driving to the basket when she was fouled hard by Watts. Whitfield went to the line after the buzzer and made one of two foul shots.

"We played smart and we won." "We did what we had to do," said Coach Tim Flanagan.

Davis led Wiscasset scoring with 13 points and Whitfield added 11.

Wiscasset High School Athletic Director Ted Finn said it was "through hard work, effort and patience," that the team went from a 5-4 record for the first half of the season and in 14th place, to a final record of 13-5 and third place in the Western Maine Heal Point Standings.

The girls will play a quarterfinal round at the Augusta Civic Center on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. They will play the winner of a preliminary game between Traip Academy and St. Dom's.
