Wiscasset Wrestler Makes History

Sean Maguire

Wiscasset 103 lb. wrestler, Kristi Pearse, became the first female Wiscasset wrestler to place at the state wrestling meet, and one of a small elite group of female wrestlers statewide to place wrestling against males.

Kristi placed third by pinning: Jeremy Sawtelle of Foxcroft, Aaron Gagnon of Penobscot Valley and Jeff Cossar of Lisbon. Her one loss was to Jeremia Barkac of Dexter by pin. Kristi finished her season with a record of 24 wins and 13 losses (including exhibition matches), 7 by pin.

Jacob's one loss was to Randy Briggs of Foxcroft in a hard fought match. Jacob was supported by his teammates, a large contingent of family, and friends all sporting his signature pink bandana. Jacob finished his season with a record of 38 and 6 with 19 by pins.

Sean and Cedric Maguire both placed fourth in 119 lb and 130 lb respectively. Sean lost to Ryan Newcomb of Dexter twice and defeated Josh Ronan of Dirigo. Cedric pinned Tristan Taggert of Hermon, lost to Chris Barkac of Dexter, defeated Joel Allen of Bucksport and lost to Dan Cornell.

Tom lost to Mike McNaughton of Foxcroft and Tyson Ober of George Stevens. Conor finished with a record of 26 wins, 14 losses, 10 wins by pin and Tom with 12 wins, 15 losses, 4 wins by pin.

As a team with six wrestlers competing, Wiscasset placed seven out of 16 teams.

The wrestlers would like to thank Mrs. Poppish and Mr. Finn for the goody basket left on the bus. After a season of dieting and weight watching, food in the vicinity of certain Wiscasset wrestlers was a scarce commodity.
