Kathy Onorato
The girls defeated Traip Academy 57 to 44 in a quarter final game on Tuesday. According to Coach Tim Flanagan, it is the first time that the girls have won a quarter final game in the history of the Augusta tournament. Wiscasset came out strong offensively in the first quarter, scoring 17 points. The girls mounted a 10-0 point run with two baskets by Amanda Davis, two by Jessie Matzell and one by Sarah Whitfield putting them on top, 15-5 with 2:21 remaining in the quarter. Traip's Courtney Connor ended Wiscasset's run with a three point shot. Colby Graffam picked up her second foul of the quarter and sent Ali Higgins to the foul line. She made both free throws that closed the gap to 15-10. Davis made two foul shots to put Wiscasset on top, 17 to 10 at the end of the first quarter. The fast break was working for Wiscasset in the second quarter. Six of their 12 points were scored off the fast break. Felicia Wade scored on an assist by Meghan Foye, Graffam on a feed from Wade and Whitfield finished on a pass from Davis. Wiscasset led at half time 29-21. Both teams struggled to score early in the third quarter. During the first three minutes, each team managed just two points apiece. Graffam and Davis scored back to back to extend the Redskins lead to 12 points with 4:05 left in the third. Traip's Kuehl Kendra scored twice and Higgins made one of two foul shots and quickly the lead was cut to seven with a quarter left. Kendra brought Traip within five points to start the final quarter. Whitfield and Graffam scored to push Wiscasset's lead to 45-38. "Patience, ladies patience," Coach Flanagan said as he stood on the sidelines, encouraging the girls to take their time on their shots. With four minutes left to play, Graffam scored to give Wiscasset a 47 to 38 point lead. Kasey Conner of Traip immediately responded with a three pointer. With time running out, Traip was forced to foul Wiscasset on every possession for the remainder of the game. Whitfield ended the game with a three pointer at the buzzer to give Wiscasset a 57 to 44 win. Coach Flanagan said, "We had some bad stages. The kids got nervous." But, he was more than happy with the end result. "Fifty-seven points is a lot for us, I was expecting something like 40." Whitefield led all scoring with 16 points, Davis had 14 and Graffam had 13. Ali Higgins and Kuelh Kendra each had 10 for Traip. Wiscasset will play Hall-Daleat 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Augusta Civic Center. |
