Shooting for two of her five points is Sarah Whitfield of Wiscasset.
The Wiscasset High School girls' basketball team ended their bid for a Western Maine Class C title, losing to #2 Hall-Dale 43-30 on Feb. 24 during the semi-final round at the Augusta Civic Center.

Wiscasset's only lead came very early when Colby Graffam opened the game with two free throws and Sarah Whitfield scored twice, including a three point shot which gave Wiscasset a 7-4 point lead. Amanda Davis went to the bench after she picked up her second personal foul of the first quarter. Wiscasset was in foul trouble early, picking up six fouls in the first quarter.

With Davis on the bench, Kaitlyn Laflin and Chelsey Dionne dominated in rebounding and scoring. "They were very physical without Amanda in there," said Coach Tim Flanagan.

Hall-Dale pulled out to a 13-7 point first quarter lead.

Wiscasset turned the ball over six times in the second quarter. Hall-Dale's defense held Wiscasset scoreless for nearly 10 minutes before Meghan Foye scored with two minutes left in the quarter. Davis converted a three point play. Wiscasset managed only five points in the entire second quarter. Hall-Dale was pulling away at half time and led 22-12.

Graffam, already in foul trouble, picked up her fourth foul with 5:45 left in the third. She remained in the game and fouled out two minutes later.

Katie Brown extended Hall-Dale's lead to 16 points. Laflin scored twice to give the Bulldogs a 37-20 point lead with one quarter left to play.

Hall-Dale continued their intensity into the fourth quarter building to a 21 point lead. Wiscasset scored eight straight points on baskets by Davis, Janet Reed and Foye to end game.

Davis led Wiscasset with 12 points and eight rebounds

Hall-Dale's Dionne led all scoring with 20 and Laflin added 17. The two combined for 24 rebounds.

The loss on Thursday ends the high school basketball career of seven seniors: Janet Reed, Sheena Pinkham, Sarah Whitfield, Colby Graffam, Maryellen Buck, Felicia Wade and Amanda Davis.

"These girls have played together since the second grade," said Flanagan. "They have all worked so hard."
