Workshop Sunday On Pruning Apple Trees
Andy Abello
A pruning workshop on old apple trees will be held on November
20 at 9 a.m. on the Schmid Preserve. Meet at the Edgecomb Town
Hall on Route 27 before driving to the workshop site at the
Hagget Field. Call Andy Abello at 882-6634 with any questions.
The morning will be a hands-on workshop on pruning old and
neglected apple trees led by Barry Hathorne, area arborist.
Barry will work on a small ancient orchard still standing but in
need of pruning. Bring your own hand tools, if you'd like.
Maine is full of old apple trees, whether in the back yard or in
the woods. With care and pruning, they can be productive after
years of neglect. Their heirloom fruit is often much better
tasting as well as more hardy than modern varieties. This
workshop is a chance to rejuvenate your old trees by learning
pruning methods of these beautiful, gnarled old apple trees.
Donations for this workshop will be greatly appreciated and will
benefit the trail work and maintenance of the Charles and
Constance Schmid Land Preserve in Edgecomb, a 766-acre preserve
open to the public year round.
For information contact Andy Abello at 882-6634.
