GrowSmart president Evan Richert presented the award, saying, "Friends of Midcoast Maine exemplifies the qualities we are looking for in an organization that collaborates with other organizations, that holds high standards for working with midcoast communities and that understands the principles of smart growth."

The Friends of Midcoast Maine is a five-year-old, member supported smart growth organization focusing on the midcoast region from Brunswick to Bucksport. The organization focuses on smart growth education, advocacy, technical assistance and smart growth project endorsements and works with citizens, community leaders and others who are concerned about the changing patterns of growth and development and their effect on the midcoast. Its officers are located in Camden.

GSM also announced awards to an individual, a community, and a business: Brunswick Town Planner, Theo Holtwijk; the cities of Lewiston and Auburn; and Reny's stores. GrowSmart Maine is a statewide smart growth organization, with offices in Yarmouth.
