Trash talk continues
Talk of switching from the Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District
(BRRDD) to the Wiscasset Transfer Station continued at Monday's Edgecomb
Selectmen's meeting. Steve Lewis, the site manager of the district, will attend the Edgecomb
Budget Committee meeting on Monday, February 12, to discuss the increase
in this year's contract. Edgecomb selectman Stuart Smith has been having discussions with
Wiscasset's Transfer Station manager, Woody Freeman on what the cost would
be for Edgecomb to bring refuse to Wiscasset. Currently Edgecomb has a
contract with BRRDD for that service. Fran Mague, the town bookkeeper, and who formerly represented Edgecomb
on the board of directors at the district, told the selectmen it would not
only be a matter of breaking the contract with district, should they
decide to go with Wiscasset - the town would also owe part of the debt
service, she said. "We would need to know what that debt would be," Smith said. According to Smith, he has received a ballpark figure of about $76,500
from Wiscasset. "Nothing firm," he said. The BRRDD contract this coming year is $89,800. In other business, the selectmen set the date for town elections:
Friday, May 18, at the town hall, with the polls open from 1 to 8 p.m. The
town meeting will be held Saturday, May 19, at the Edgecomb Eddy School,
beginning at 10 a.m. Nomination papers for town offices will be available from the town
office February 22 through April 3. Town offices up for election include: one selectman, three year term;
town clerk, one year term; tax collector, one year term; treasurer, one
year term; Planning board, two members, for three-year terms; Planning
board, one member, one-year term; Road Commissioner, one-year term; School
board member, three-year term. This year's town report will be dedicated to Joanne Krawic, who is
retiring as the Edgecomb Eddy School Principal after 17 years. Krawic
will retire at the end of the school year. Since 1990 she has served as
principal, beginning at the historic school by the same name on the Cross
Point Road that was built in 1857. She played a strong role in the design
of the new school built in 2002, and dedicated May 17, 2003. Town manager welcomed The selectmen sent a letter to Wiscasset's new town manager Arthur
Faucher, welcoming him to the area, and wishing him much success. "We look forward to meeting you to advance our mutual interest," the
selectmen wrote. Edgecomb and Wiscasset have several issues in common, such as the
public water and sewer service, the Wiscasset Route 1 corridor, and the
present and future development and use of the former Maine Yankee nuclear
power plant area. The selectmen accepted the resignation of Lisa McSwain from the
planning board effective in May. She served one year of a three-year
term. The resignation of Jed Colby from the budget committee was also
accepted. The board will contact former selectman Rod Hooper to see if he
is interested in filling the position on the budget committee. Town Clerk Claudia Coffin gave the selectmen a list of committee
appointments that need to be filled. The selectmen will contact potential
candidates to fill the positions and make official appointments in
upcoming meetings. The board appointed Coffin as Registrar of Voters for a one-year
term. |
