The Last Dance
, a murder mystery aboard the Maine Eastern Railroad, is scheduled for
Friday, September 21. The progressive story line is played out on board as
the train rolls down the tracks.
The drama begins on the platform at the historic Rockland train station
and continues once the train gets underway. The actors, members of a
loose knit group called the Belfast Interactive Players, are led by
Belfast High School drama teacher, Mike Lawson. Lawson was instrumental
in putting the cast together from a collection of his current and former
students.
The activity on the train puts the actors and the audience literally
within arms' length, as they interrelate with each other, moving from one
car to the next. While passengers on one car work together to examine
clues to determine who the murderer is, the players are repeating their
original performance in the next car.
The murder mystery theme train has proven to be a success. It has
resulted in an increased number of travelers using Rockland as the
beginning point of the journey. More than 100 people will return to
Rockland in time to enjoy a late supper at the train station restaurant,
which is located in the space once used as the waiting room during the
first half of the 20
th
century.
The theatrical production is a treat for passengers who get on in the
morning for a ride to Rockland. When they get on the train for the return
trip in the afternoon, they receive the added value of the live
performance.
The murder mystery train operates on the same schedule as the regular
runs, leaving from Rockland at 3:55 p.m. on train #3.
