Jennie F. Cromwell, 95, of Westport Island passed away Wednesday, September 12, at her daughter-in-law's home. Born in Jonesport on March 28, 1912, she was a daughter of Archie and Julia (Alley) Brewer. She grew up in Boothbay and attended Boothbay schools. On September 1, 1928 she married Edwin R. Cromwell and they made their home on Westport Island. Mrs. Cromwell was employed at Bath Iron Works during World War II and employed as a waitress at several local restaurants. In the 1950s she and her husband owned and operated Bayside Oaks snack bar on Westport Island for over 20 years. She served on the school board and was a ballot clerk for more than 40 years for Westport Island. She was a member of the Rebekah's. She enjoyed dancing, camping, bingo and playing cribbage with her daughter-in-law. Mrs. Cromwell was predeceased by her husband, Edwin R. Cromwell on May 8, 2001; two sons, Richard, as an infant and Alfred L. Cromwell on October 4, 2002; four brothers, Tom Brewer, Vernon Brewer, Herbert Brewer, Stillman Brewer; and four sisters, Nora Clifford, Margaret Emerson, LuLu Sprague and Cornelia Johannson. Survivors include two daughters, Myrna L. Dow and her husband Donald of Westport Island and Janice Lester and her husband Albert of Westport Island; one brother, Eddie Brewer of Trevett; two sisters, Irma Heaberlin of Boothbay and Nancy McKnight of Bristol; one daughter-in-law, Barbara M. Cromwell; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westport Island Volunteer Fire Department, 6 Fowles Point, Westport Island, ME 04578. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.
Alberta A. Sherman, 94, of Wiscasset, died peacefully Thursday, September 13, at St. Andrews Hospital. Born in Damariscotta on May 13, 1913, she was a daughter of Leeman and Caroline E. (Hatch) Potter. She was raised in Whitefield, attended school in Whitefield and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1934. After graduating, she worked at Superior Laundry in Wiscasset. On May 20th 1939, she married Stanton Sherman and they resided in Wiscasset. During World War II, she volunteered for Civil Defense. After the war, she worked at Wiscasset Lumber Company as a bookkeeper until her daughter, Sally Ann, was born. Mrs. Sherman's family was always her first priority. She also enjoyed spending time with her many friends. She was an avid reader, a volunteer for the Red Cross, the Children's Health Clinic, and she loved to knit and crochet. She was predeceased by her husband, Stanton A. Sherman, on June 17, 1999; one brother, Alfred E. Potter; and one sister, Martha Kaler. Survivors include her daughter, Sally A. Sherman of Bristol; one brother-in-law, Walter H. Sherman and his wife Sally of Wiscasset; one niece, Jean Nevins and her husband Jim of Manchester; a niece, Nancy Roby and her husband Wally of Wiscasset; and several other nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, at Greenlawn Cemetery on Rumerrill Road in Wiscasset. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, P.O. Box 350, Wiscasset, ME 04578.
