Last Monday Inge Soule gave a lesson on embroidery on paper to a group of interested members. This is a method of making special cards and several said it was easy and a lot of fun. She will give another lesson next Monday, September 24 after lunch.

Last Tuesday, 24 Senior Center members traveled to the Gardiner Senior Club to enjoy lunch with them. Theirs is a rather small club, meeting in the Gardiner Lions Club building for lunch and programs. They certainly made us feel welcome with a delicious roast beef lunch served family style. Seating arrangements were made to alternate members of the two groups so we might get to know each other. Dessert was "Sex-On-The-Beach!" Delicious!

After lunch we all enjoyed some great music by The Swing Time Band. To start things off the ladies of the Gardiner Senior Club sang their theme song welcoming us all to their place. The music was so good that our own Dick "Spoons" Grondin, took out his famous spoons and joined in the festivities to the delight of everyone. There was even some dancing in the aisles.

Since the Tuesday Cribbage had been moved to Wednesday, a breakfast was held to start things off. This was no ordinary breakfast. Our Chef Steve White made potato pancakes, blueberry pancakes, bacon, sausage, ham, toast, juice and, of course, eggs any style. There were the usual scrambled eggs along with poached and any style requested.

Since I did not win the following tournament, the breakfast was the best part of the day. I'm sure Hal Thayer would agree too, since he came in last in the tournament. One of the things that makes cribbage "enjoyable" is that there is skill involved, but the luck of the cards can make you first or last.

After dinner last Wednesday Don Allisot from the American Legion gave a short presentation on the Healing Field project planned for Veteran's Day this November and Memorial Day next year. "The State of Maine American Legion, Sons of the American Legion and the Auxiliary will post 25,000 American flags filling Capitol Park and flowing south along Interstate 95 throughout the state of Maine to the New Hampshire border.

This memorial is "to remember our Veterans and their service given to our country, as well as to honor lives lost in tragedy and to heal us all by encompassing the American spirit." This is from their Web site www.healingfield.org/maine07 which contains more info on this worthwhile project. The Senior Center of Wiscasset, our fund raising arm of the Senior Center, will use some of our funds to purchase five flags to honor all area veterans.

Last Wednesday there were 38 on the sign up list for the Community Dinner but about 20 additional people showed up. Our Chef was able to provide enough dinners for everyone but he did run out of the special dessert, chocolate cream pie. I want to encourage everyone to come to dinner even if they decide to come at the last minute, but I can't believe that almost half of all the people there decided at the last minute to come. We don't want to turn anyone away, but we cannot keep food supplies at restaurant levels and still offer low prices. Please help us out by making a reservation. You need a reservation even if you are a member and attend regularly!

The annual Members Only Dinner will be held on Sunday, October 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. the afternoon. This is free to all members. Members must RSVP by Monday Oct. 9. On Saturday, October 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. there will be a Swing Dance featuring the Bath Municipal Band sponsored by the Gardiner Savings Bank. Admission will be $8 per person.

Denise Clark won the 50-50 on Wednesday. The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, Sept. 12, were Keith Bridgham and Ken Colby tied for first, Hal Thayer got low score and Patty Bridgham, Tiger Chubbuck and Ann Merry tied for the high hand. On Thursday, Sept. 13, Jane LaBreck was first, Sherry Westfall second, Charlie Preyer got the low score and Marlene Rines and Ken Colby tied for the high hand.
