Summer slid serenely into fall last weekend and scarcely a change was
noted. Saturday was the annual Craft Fair at the Town Hall. There were
some beautiful crafts on display, ranging from homemade jellies and
pickles to Christmas crafts and hand knit items. There were hand painted
mailboxes and jewelry boxes along with placemats, potholders and doll
clothes.
The customers who came got an early start on holiday shopping. I
enjoyed displaying my hand-painted porcelain dolls. I loved seeing old
friends and chatting with everyone.
While the crafters were displaying their wares at the Town Hall, the
Town Office was also busy. The public hearings on the new ordinances and
ordinance changes were held Saturday morning. I heard it went well and
that it was one of the most pleasant hearings in a while. I'm sorry I
missed it, but craft fairs are important this time of year.
Paul was given permission from his doctors to resume driving once
again. He has taken advantage of going off early to Wiscasset for his swim
at the Community Center and doing errands around town. He says he won't
be comfortable driving any further at this point, but he is really
enjoying his new-found freedom.
My yard came to life today when I noticed movement out the kitchen
window and counted 25 turkeys stepping mincingly across my lawn. We've
also had several deer lounging around. Coming home late Tuesday evening I
saw five deer in the road between the bridge and West Shore Road. PLEASE
remember to be on the lookout for them, especially at night.
On Saturday, October 6, the Human Resource Committee is sponsoring an
October Fest Sing-a-Long with Georgia Sledge at the Town Office at 2 p.m.
There will be refreshments. All Westport Island residents are welcome.
Please contact Cyndy Lewis if you need a ride at 882-4753.
The Westport Community Association elected new officers at their annual
meeting. Co-Presidents are Charlie Howe and Mary Lou Jacoby. The vice
president is Debbie Crawford. They also elected Treasurer Susan Partelow
and Secretary Ruth Nelson. They are planning their annual Christmas
Service for Sunday December 9.
This committee plans many fun events for our island and they would love
some input from local people as to what sorts of activities they would
like to attend next year. The barbeque supper with the blue grass band is
always very well attended. If you can think of other local entertainers
or events you'd like sponsored here, please call Charlie Howe at 882-6606.
Their next planning meeting takes place at the Town Office on October
18.
Jay and Lori of the Island Convenience Store are taking over processing
the bottles for the fire department. You can still leave them at the
department and Jay will collect them, or you can drop them directly at the
store if you find that to be more convenient. There is a separate place
for the Fire Department collection.
Last Friday night my mom treated Paul and I to dinner at the Island
store. We had pot roast, mashed potatoes, veggies, salad and a roll. It
was very good food and a lot of fun to chat with neighbors. If you haven't
yet ventured out there for dinner, I would highly suggest you give them a
call to see what special they're having at 882-9300.
If you have any news item, family function, or just want to brag about
your kid in the paper so you can cut it out for your scrapbook, give me a
call at 882-9032 or e-mail me at
