Tell It To George

Tell It To George is a collection of thoughts from here and away, from people who want to get their two cents worth in, without using their names.

Truth in advertising?

Point East continues to run ads in Down East magazine implying that the development is in place. I drove in there yesterday and saw very little progress. I could not find the marina, and the restaurants and shops are off limits. Can anyone tell me what's going on? What happened to truth in advertising? Nowhere do they say "under development" or "to open in 2008 or 2009 or 2010 or when we feel like it…" Is this ethical?

Where's my $625?

The Twin River people keep saying that the proposed gasification facility is going to be located at the former Maine Yankee site. It is actually going to be in the wooded area which runs along and near the power lines, on the opposite side of the road from where Maine Yankee was. This means a lot of clear-cutting and the disturbance of wildlife.

In April 2005, Point East mailed a circular which said the tax benefit from the Mason Station development would be $625 per house. Now that the tax bills are out, how many of you taxpayers in Wiscasset have seen your $625 yet?

Don't trust permitting process

Hey Wiscasset, all these out-of- state boys are telling us in the newspaper and on the phone that the permitting process will protect us. Don't buy it!

Just ask the folks who live near the Love Canal or the Biddeford incinerator. These guys have permits, yet they released stuff that  hurts people's health  and damages the environment.

You must protect yourself and the environment from the pollutants this proposed coal plant will generate. Vote "no" on the ordinance change!

Just remember, out of state "fat cats" promising tax relief for Wiscasset while making mega bucks for themselves have the money to get whatever they want.

Sudden interest in fishing…

As predicted, the opponents to the Twin River project have taken a new and sudden interest in our area fisherman. They're pulling out all the stops. "It isn't that we don't want our waterfront views ruined. No really, I mean it. We really care... really."

If half the people on the docks last Thursday actually cared about the lobstermen, perhaps they would have some credibility. Where were any of these people when the feds and state put severe limitations on fishing?  I recognized a lot of people in the newspaper photos.

An interesting news story would be a follow up to see how many of these so-called caring and supportive people of the lobsterman have their land posted to prevent worm diggers from having the access to the mud flats that they used to have. I know for a fact some of them do. It's convenient to use people and pretend to care when they serve your selfish purpose. The parade might have been good for photos, but when the smoke and mirrors clear, the naked truth exposes true motivations.

Think outside the box

If asked to vote in November on the issue of the gasification plant, I think we will be asked to allow a changing of ordinances only (not voting on actually bringing in a gasification plant.) Yet, keep in mind, once you vote yes to change the ordinances for something of this magnitude, it opens the doors for other businesses of this size and importance to the town's future. Think outside the box when voting on this please.

Help us out here…

In regards to citizens in the surrounding towns wanting "input" on whether Wiscasset townspeople should allow the gasification plant to "set up house" in town or not…

If this was to happen. it would be to assist with the town's tax base. The voters agreed to take $900,000 out of the reserve account once again to keep the mill rate down. Why don't the surrounding towns chip in more, so we don't have to keep dipping into the reserve account.

If they feel that strongly, they should be willing to help find a solution instead of protesting against finding an answer. This isn't the first time. Are they willing to pay more taxes into Wiscasset to help with the problem of increasing taxes every year? Take a look at the people trying to sell and leave town.

Maine needs growth

Today I received a flyer in the mail asking for my hard-earned money. The group asking for it calls themselves B.R.A.

They didn't give many facts, just a lot of negative hype in hopes of getting people all riled up. They say they are against that gas plant project in Wiscasset, but they don't say who they are or how they will choose to spend MY money, should I decide to send any.

I'd like to know what they will do with the money if Wiscasset votes down the height change. I doubt they'll send it back. I doubt any of them have kids in the Wiscasset School System. I doubt they care about anything except their own pocketbooks, their views and the selling price of their property once they decide they're too good to live near a plant. I doubt any of them will apply for a job over there, and neither will their kids.

Maine is already a very unfriendly place for business and this type of stuff just makes us all look bad, when the reality is many of us are looking forward to growth in our community. Maybe it'll bring in some nice regular folks who care about kids, jobs and neighbors and the other folks can move on out to make room for them.
