Selectmen deal with tree cutting

Charlotte Boynton

Staff reporter

The Westport Island selectmen's meeting Monday evening began with a conference call to Maine licensed forester Edward Witt Sr. of Fryeburg.

The purpose of the call was to discuss the replanting of trees on the Susan Leeman property on Westport Island. During the spring of 2007, Jeffery Ward cut down approximately 50 trees within 75 feet of the normal high water mark of the Sheepscot River, which is in violation of Westport Island's Shoreland zoning regulations.

When the violation was discovered, Gary Richardson, the town's code enforcement officer (CEO), met on the site with representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection, Maine Forest Service, and Jeffery Ward on behalf of Leeman. An agreement was reached requiring Leeman to bring the area into compliance with the town's Shoreland Zoning ordinance.

Witt developed the replanting plan, and presented it to the selectmen for approval October 2.

During the conference call Witt agreed he would supervise the planting with Ward.

According to the plan, after the trees are planted, the town CEO and Witt will inspect the site. The site will also be inspected twice a year for a two-year period by Witt and the town CEO.

The Maine Department of Transportation will make a presentation of the Wiscasset bypass Draft Environmental Impact Study, Thursday, December 6, at the Westport Island Town Hall, at 6 p.m.
