Tell It To George

Tell It To George is a collection of thoughts from here and away, from people who want to get their two cents worth in, without using their names.

We can speak for

ourselves, thank you

I just read the Wiscasset Newspaper hot off the press. What I read from two people from Westport Island doesn't make those particular pages suitable to use in the grandkid's hamster cage.

One says Wiscasset has "lost its heart and soul." I can assure you we not only have heart and soul, we kept our brains too. We don't need you to think for us, thank you very much. And as far as the telemarketer and "friend" from Wiscasset goes, there is nothing in your phony telephone account even remotely believable.

Just a weak stunt

Enough with the weak stunts. If that truckload of coal that was driven into Wiscasset was so toxic, they would have been required to get a permit from Maine DEP to transport it into our beautiful little town.

Has anyone noticed that a barrel of crude oil hit $89 today? That means home heating fuel is going up again. How's $5 a gallon sound? Perhaps when we are completely broke and run out of our homes, we'll all decide to cut the crap and be realistic. Every time something new is built, the same crowd runs around telling us we'll all grow three heads and they must save us from ourselves. The only result is that we get screwed again. End the theatrics and build the new plant!

Now here's an idea…

Maybe National RE/sources should consider giving all its Wiscasset holdings to a church, college or other non-taxable organization.  It would probably be more profitable (write-offs) and definitely less aggravation. Less tax income, but Wiscasset will remain the Pretty Village in Maine with the highest taxes.

Jobs and tourism

According to the opponents of the power plant, our housing values will go down 20 percent to 60 percent if the plant is built, and tourism will be destroyed.  Let's see, if 750 workers are employed to construct the plant and another 200 are employed there, that means what?  Housing values will decline?  Hmmm.  So, according to this train of thought, the creation of jobs triggers downward housing values?  Following that logic, the way to increase housing values in Bath is to close BIW.  Does anyone at Back River Alliance think before they issue silly statements about a tanking housing market?  Or do they think we're just a bunch of hayseeds out here?

And then they claim there will be a devastating impact on tourism.  It's true that tourists travel up and down Route 1 in the tens of thousands, but they'll see the power plant... how? They'll only know about the power plant if we clear-cut a visual site line from Norm's Used Cars, past the airport, and down to the site of the power plant.  Oops, no, clear cutting won't even make it visible.  We'll have to bulldoze the hills between Route 1 and the site as well.

Gucci shoes?

The "Letters to the Editor" about the power plant are ripening. Retired people from away are now trashing other people from away who want to build a power plant here because they supposedly wear Gucci shoes?   In other words, a BRA (Back River Alliance) member is complaining about the shoes of his opponent!  You just gotta laugh at the level of discourse about this proposed power plant!

A matter of respect

Has Scott Houldin so little respect for the intelligence of the people of Wiscasset that, knowing full well that CO2 sequestration is not feasible in the state of Maine because of our geological make up, he has the audacity to state that his gasification plant will be CO2 sequestration ready and that he hopes that someone (perhaps the good Lord?) will open a research center on the Maine Yankee property and will come up with the answers.

Why not open the research center now ? Give us the answers before we agree to let him build his 230 ft. monstrosity in our beautiful town.I understand that there is plenty of room in his i-park.

Promises, promises

Now, Twin River/Point East is promising $3,500 off for the average homeowner's taxes. Aren't these the same people who, in 2005, promised $625 off the average homeowner's taxes. After failing to deliver on the $625, they have upped the ante. Perhaps the Mason Station should have been a casino. Unfortunately, with Twin River and Point East, the taxpayers of Wiscasset are dealing with a stacked deck, or, shall we say, a stacked deck of cards, where the joker always seems to appear.

Now, Twin River is inviting people to the Mason Station for sales pitches on the gasification proposal. If you go to one of their sales pitches, ask them where the marina is, where the boutiques are, and all the other things that were promised three years ago there.

Build it in Connecticut

Did you get the slick Point East brochure telling us it is patriotic to support energy independence?  Of course it is.  But it's sure easy for the "wheelers and dealers" from Greenwich, Connecticut to challenge our patriotism just because we resist them imposing a dirty coal power plant here, where we don't need the electricity, so they avoid dirtying their pretty part of Connecticut, where they do need the electricity.  Of course they don't want the pretty Connecticut girl on their brochure to have to breath in   mercury and other pollutants.  Is it more patriotic for Maine children to have to breath it?

Hey, you Connecticut patriots, build your plant at home there where electricity is needed and keep the grit and pollution there, too. We aren't that dumb!

Not necessarily gasification

I, as did the chairman of the board, grew up here all my life less than a mile from Maine Yankee. Rather we have economic growth in town or not, doesn't guarantee our children will stay in this town. The majority of my classmates do not live and pay taxes in this town, even with Maine Yankee benefit (taxes) most of their years here! I agree we need a new tax base for those who choose to stay, but this gasification plant may not be the solution. By voting yes, you will agree to allow something of this magnitude in town, but not necessarily the gasification plant.
