Remember that warm Saturday last July when Summerfest was held on the
common in Wiscasset? All the leaves are gone now and the temperature is a
tad cooler, to say the least.
But back to when it was warm and sunny and all was green. There were
all kinds of treasures to find that day. There were fresh baked bread and
pastries, jewelry, wood crafts, plants, "jumble," books and many new and
"previously appreciated" items donated by local businesses and individuals
for the popular silent auction. There was a dog show and hot dogs and
hamburgers and ice cream and sodas and great music. It was a great summer
day to just relax and enjoy.
But Summerfest is more than just a summer day to enjoy. Many members
and non-members of First Congregational Church, Wiscasset, spent countless
hours to bring all this together. Many individuals and businesses donated
items for the silent auction. Over $8,000 was raised on that day.
Later the Summerfest Committee and interested individuals got together
to decide which organizations would participate in the distribution of the
proceeds and how much each would receive. Sometimes new organizations are
added and sometimes organizations are dropped, but generally the list
stays the same. Expenses were minimal with everything being donated,
including much of the food, so just about all the proceeds were given to
local charities.
Then on Mission Sunday, in late October, the various organizations were
invited to be present at the morning service to receive recognition of
their organization's work and a check.
After the service all were invited to Fellowship Hall for coffee and
conversation. This gave everyone a chance to meet and talk with the
representatives of the organizations that benefited from that wonderful
summer day last July.
On Sunday, October 28, the proceeds from last July's Summerfest were
distributed to the following local charitable organizations: Camp
POSTCARD, Carpenter's Boat Shop, Chaplain's Fund, CHIP Inc, Church World
Service, Habitat for Humanity 7 Rivers Maine, Healthy Kids, Kno-Wal-Lin
Home Health Care/Hospice, Lifeline of Midcoast Maine, Lincoln County
Animal Shelter, Lincoln County Triad, Miles Home Health/Hospice, Mobius
Inc, New Hope for Women, Pastor's Emergency Fund, People to People, St.
Philip's Food Pantry, Ladies Organ Society, Tedford Shelter, Transitions
Grieving Children's Program, Tri-County Literacy Volunteers, Washington
County Children's Program, and Youth Promise.
