Lady wildcats win 41 straight games
The Woolwich Central Girls Soccer team finished their third undefeated season in a row with a 2-1 win over Camden Rockport Middle School in the Bus Line League Championship Game on Saturday Oct 20. They finished the season 10-0 to win the League Trophy and then defeated Boothbay 4-1 and Rockland 3-0 on their way to the tournament final. The 13-0 season puts their three-year record at 41-0.
The game was a total team effort with all 15 players seeing action in the final. Woolwich dominated the first 25 minutes of play with crisp passing and great ball distribution. Six minutes into the game, Tori Field, Woolwich's leading scorer, took a pass from Bess Howell and scored on a shot from just outside the 18. Five minutes later, Howell sent a cross into the goal mouth and Field added a second goal as she picked up a loose ball and drove it 10 yards into the lower corner.
Woolwich had several more chances to score as Ali Miller, a constant threat, was just wide to the right and Camden goalkeeper Lindsay Bumbalo made a nice save on a shot by Gabby Bones. "I think the game would have been over if we had gone up 3-0. We would have beaten them mentally," said Coach Randy Howell.
Camden held Woolwich off and Caroline Sanclift scored with five minutes left in the half on a scramble in front of the net. Then, with two minutes left, Camden was awarded a penalty kick, but the shot sailed just over the cross bar.
With their momentum restored, Camden controlled more of the play in the second half and kept Woolwich goalkeeper Sarah Jordan busy. The play was very intense and at a fast pace. Jordan's stellar play was aided by defenders Jenny Gainey, Savannah Simmons-Grover, Rebecca Hadik and Devon Wilcox and by midfielders Sally Gardiner- Smith and Issy Bones. "Camden is a very good team and I can't say enough about the defense. They played with poise and confidence while under a tremendous amount of pressure. They made very few mistakes," said Howell.
Reserves Marisa Mitchell, Megan Young, Masha Heath, and Nichole Laggan all played well and made significant contributions to the win.
"I was incredibly proud of how these kids kept their composure throughout the season. There is a lot of pressure on a team that is undefeated and they really stayed focused. The atmosphere at practices was light and fun, but we always accomplished what we set out to do. We actually trained pretty hard for a middle school team. These kids really love soccer and I think they won because they were fit, had so much fun together, and didn't see losing as an option," Howell said.
Over the course of the season, the Lady Wildcats scored 61 goals while holding their opponents to 7. Nine of the 15 players scored goals with Tori Field (29) and Ali Miller (10) leading the way.
Captains were Tori Field, Sarah Jordan, and Ali Miller.
The team is optimistic about next year. They lose only four eighth graders and return eight starters.
"A lot of our players are members of the Bath Clippers, and that gives us a very strong base for a small school," added Howell.
The Lady Wildcats are coached by Randy Howell and Colleen Madden. |
