Veterans Day Celebration in Wiscasset on Monday
Charlotte Boynton
The Bradford-Sortwell-Wright American Legion Post #54, of Wiscasset
will hold a Veterans Day Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial on Monday,
November 12, at 10 a.m.
The ceremony will include a dedication of a bench that has been donated
by the Cole Land Transportation Museum's Memorial Bench project.
Galen Cole, owner of the museum, had 50 memorial granite benches made
for towns, on a first-come first serve basis.
Wiscasset's memorial bench will be placed in front of the Veterans'
Honor Roll at the Municipal Building.
The Legion will also host a luncheon at noon at their post home (across
from the Two Bridges Regional Jail entrance).
According to Post Commander James Seigars, the public is invited to the
luncheon and to share part of the day with the veterans.
The members and guests that attend the luncheon will enjoy a menu of
ham, potato salad, tossed salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, brown bread,
and rolls. Apple pie and rocky road cake will be served for dessert.
The event will give local people an opportunity to visit the new post.
For many years the post home was located on Fort Hill. After the building
was sold on Fort Hill, the Legion purchased a home on Route 1 which became
the new post.
The Bradford-Sortwell-Wright post has been part of the Wiscasset scene
since November 3, 1919. Their first meeting was held in Fred Merry's
barbershop, located on the second floor of the Franklin Block.
According to a history of the post, there were 10 members present, and
they elected four officers: Dr. B.A. Bailey as Post Commander; Leonard F.
Metcalf, Post Adjutant; Fred Merry, Finance Officer, and Fred T. Willey,
Post Employment Officer.
The post currently has 126 members. The officers include: Post
commander James Seigars; First Vice Commander Bill Curtis; Adjutant and
Chaplain Dennis Hill, Chaplain Sgt-At-Arms; Historian, Service Officer and
Chairman of Membership Walter Meite.
