Josephine S. Bryer
Josephine "Jo" S. Bryer, 91, of Wiscasset, passed away peacefully at
her home in Wiscasset, Monday, November 5 after being diagnosed with colon
cancer in May of this year. Born in Boston, Mass., on December 7, 1915, she was the daughter of
Ralph Edward and Frances Elizabeth Clarke. She graduated from Ashland High
School in Ashland in 1933 and was First Honor Essayist. She also took the one-year course at Chandler Secretarial School in
Boston, and from there had various office jobs. Married in 1935, she was a
colorist and personal secretary for Framingham, Mass. furniture designer
and manufacturer Wallace Nutting. During World War II she ran the office
at an airport where fighter pilots were trained. She was also secretary to
the president of the Roger Babson financial advisory company. Mrs. Bryer and her family were members of the Congregational Church in
Sherborn, Mass.; she served on the town of Sherborn Advisory Board. She
was active with her husband in their building contracting business, John
G. Bryer, Inc. in Sherborn. She was co-owner of Bryer & Hardigan, Inc.
real estate, in Sherborn for 15 years. During her retirement years in Florida, she and her husband were
members and avid enthusiasts of square dance and square dance camping
clubs there, dancing until he suffered a stroke at 82. During the many years of owning several summer properties in North
Edgecomb, they bought and restored the early 1800s so-called "Adams Inn"
on the Eddy Road. In 2002 she became a Trustee and the Secretary of the Wiscasset Senior
Center, and newspaper columnist for the center until June of 2007. She
also served on the Wiscasset Transportation Committee. In 2004 she was the founder and a Board Director of the Wiscasset
Senior Center Scholarship Fund, Inc., a fund only for students interested
in learning a trade, business or any other hands-on career. Survivors include three daughters, Sandra L. Bryer of Marlboro, Mass.,
Suzanne R. Bryer-Ayers and husband Norval of Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, and
Syl D. (Priscilla) Bryer Manlove and her husband Howard of La Salle,
Colo.; and a son, John S. Bryer, and daughter-in-law Janet M. Bryer, both
of Wiscasset; two granddaughters, Jillian R. and Laura A. Bryer of
Boothbay Harbor and Phippsburg, respectively; and one grandson, Jacob Lynn
Manlove of South Dakota; a nephew, David Popp, of Dresden; as well as
other nieces and nephews in Michigan, New York, Oregon and
Massachusetts. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 17 at the

Lemuel (Bert) Howe
Lemuel H. (Bert) Howe, 82, of Boothbay, passed away at home on
Veterans
Day, Sunday, November 11, after several years of battling cancer. In 1949 he graduated from Dartmouth College with a B.S. in Physics. He
was a successful sales engineer, a respected math and science teacher, a
builder, farmer woodsman and naturalist. In 1968, he launched a 13-year endeavor to build and operate a family
campground for tenters and RV's, leaving the land in its natural state. In
his 50s, Bert built a family log home on the Damariscotta River, farming
and living much as the early settlers of Maine had; who inspired much of
his writing, including a historical novel, "Echo Horizon." At the age of
70, he completed construction of a second home in Pleasant Cove,
Boothbay. He provided transportation to and from the Portland Jetport in his
ground transportation business, "Boothbay Stage Line." Mr. Howe enjoyed hiking in the White Mountains, sea kayaking, and
carving stylized birds, for which he was well known. He especially loved
family gatherings. In addition to his wife of 54 years, Jean M. Howe, he is survived by
three sons, Benjamin Howe of Rye, N.H., James G. Howe and Heather Burr of
Cumberland, and Brian M. Howe and wife Diane of Boothbay Harbor; one
daughter, Jocelyn Howe Martell and husband Michael of Tuftonboro, N.H.;
grandchildren, Andrew Goupil of Dresden, Jamie Hildreth and fiancé
Ron Cesar of Framingham, Mass., Christopher Apollonio of Dresden, Joshua
M. Howe and Morgan Jean Howe of Boothbay Harbor, and Laura Jean Howe of
Cumberland; one great-grandson, Nathaniel Dickson of Bath; one sister,
Catherine P. Robbins of Hampstead, N.H. A service and celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m.,
Saturday, November 24 at the Boothbay Harbor Congregational Church at the
corner of Townsend and Eastern avenues. In lieu of flowers, please continue to treat the earth with deep

Josephine G. Johnson
Josephine G. Johnson, 92, of Wiscasset, died Sunday, November 11, at a
Brunswick Hospital. Born in Kingman on June 9, 1915, she was a daughter of Brice and Bertha
(Hanson) Sutter. She attended Wiscasset schools and in 1933 she married
Forrest C. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Wiscasset Senior Citizens and the
First Congregational Church of Wiscasset where she was involved in the
organ society. She enjoyed spending time with her family, wintering in Florida with
her husband, knitting, and sewing. She was predeceased by her husband, Forrest C. Johnson in 1999; and by
one son, William Johnson in 1967. Survivors include one daughter, Joan B. Reed and her husband Cecil; one
son, Stanley W. Johnson and his wife Betty; two brothers, James Sutter and
his wife Jean, all of Wiscasset, and John Sutter and his wife Charlotte of
Woolwich; one sister, Eleanor Leslie and her husband L. Dean of Akron,
Ohio; 12 grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; two great-great-
grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 17 at
Greenlawn Cemetery in Wiscasset with Rev. John Potter officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wiscasset Senior Center
Scholarship Fund, 242 Gardiner Road, Wiscasset, ME 04578. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street in
Wiscasset.

Mark S. Munroe
Mark Scott Munroe, 46, of North Newcastle, died unexpectedly on
Monday,
November 5 at the Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. Born in June 10, 1961 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Mark Eugene
Munroe and Rebecca Parsons, and is a graduate of Lincoln Academy in
Newcastle. He also attended M.C.I and Maine Maritime Academy in
Castine. Mr. Munroe was employed in the local area recently delivering
newspapers in the South Bristol area for the Portland Press Herald. His world revolved around his son and he loved more than anything else,
spending time with him and had been his son's #1 fan, helping to coach him
in baseball and football. He was passionate about being on the water,
snowmobiling, watching NASCAR races, the Patriots, and his little dog
Skipper. He is predeceased by his grandfather Dr. Neil Parsons. Survivors include his son, Westleigh Munroe and his mother, Sandra
Staples of North Newcastle; his mother, Rebecca Parsons and Richard
Guislin of Damariscotta; father, Mark Munroe of Exeter, New Hampshire; one
sister, Lori Munroe Cole and husband Raymond of Newcastle; grandmother,
Joyce Parsons of Damariscotta; many uncles, including Lee Parsons and his
wife Regina Davey of Nobleboro; and several nieces, nephews and
cousins. A celebration of Mr. Munroe's life was held Saturday, November 10 at
the Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro. Interment was private at St. Patrick's
Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Mr. Munroe's
memory to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements were entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation
