I hope everyone had a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving holiday. Paul,
mom, and I all went on our short vacation to Lubec over the holiday. We
had an awful lot of fun, not so much because of food and activity as
because we were together. We stayed in Machais on Wednesday night. On
Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, there wasn't a restaurant open, so we had a
nice brunch at Dunkin Donuts! We spent the afternoon driving around
Jonesport, and then picked up a pizza and salad for dinner at the local
gas station. We gave thanks for our family and friends and enjoyed that
delicious fare over a game of cribbage.
On Friday, we drove out to Lubec. If you've never been there, it's
worth the trip. We enjoyed the lovely views, visited the West Quoddy light
house and drove over to Campobello Island in Canada. There, we made a stop
to see the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. It was too cold to get
out and walk the lovely grounds, but we decided it was worth going back to
one day, maybe next spring.
We made a stop to visit with Alan Firth, an old friend of Bill
Bonyun's. Together, they had begun a non-profit program called
Traditional Arts and Education. They taught history through folk songs in
the local schools system. The program has grown into the Cobscook
Community Center where local people of all ages are welcome to participate
in learning activities including music lessons, weaving and other fiber
arts, pottery, farming, and more. There is a library, a computer room, an
amphitheater, a shared garden and a playroom. It was a wonderful example
of how much a community can accomplish when people choose to work
together.
Between the Westport Volunteer Fire Department and the Human Resource
Committee, several island families had delicious meals to share with their
loved ones. The fire department delivered boxes full of canned goods,
baking ingredients, and whole turkeys to families needing a hand for the
holiday. The resource committee cooked meals for those individuals who
weren't able to cook for themselves or didn't have a need for an entire
turkey. This year, they cooked at the home of Linda Davis and Richard
DeVries. I understand Linda spent the better part of two entire days doing
meal prep. I know the people receiving the meals prepared with such love
and dedication truly enjoyed every last bite.
The Holiday Faire will be held at the Squire Tarbox Inn again this
year. This small faire offers a great opportunity to see locally made hand
crafted items. You can connect with some local crafters and artists while
enjoying some delicious treats. It's a perfect stop for that special
Christmas gift or decoration. The date will be Saturday, December 9.
Please look for an ad in this newspaper or call Carole Dunbar at 882-8143
for further details.
Following the Faire, there will be a Christmas Choir program held at
the Westport Island Community church beginning at 7 p.m. This is the
beautiful small church located beside the Old Town Hall. This program
always brings a feeling of peace and friendship with it. We hope to see
you all there.
