Wiscasset Senior Center

Hopefully by the time you read this Spencer and his Dad, Steve White, will be home. In the meantime Morgan has been doing an exceptional job handling the meal preparation. He did get Thursday off when the snow storm caused the Community Center to close.

After the Community Dinner on Wednesday Dec. 19 everyone had a real treat when the Girl Scout Brownie Troop 152 came in to sing some Christmas songs. They did a terrific job.

That same evening the Trustees presented a Christmas gift to Nancy Appleton. Nancy can be found in the kitchen helping out for the lunches and dinners. Many times she does all that work as a volunteer just because she likes helping out. She is a very hard worker and does a thorough job. Her efforts go largely unseen with little recognition except from Steve and the other kitchen helpers and volunteers.

I hope everyone got everything they wanted for Christmas and hopefully the New Year will see great things for all of us. Here are some things I would like to see in 2008. Let me know what you think about these. The first thing is a drug store in Wiscasset. I like to drive and I like the drive to Damariscotta but I'd like to do it less frequently. If Damariscotta can have 3 drug stores it would seem that Wiscasset could have one. Second it would be nice to have a John Deere dealer in town. After all these years I finally bought a John Deere mower so I would have a local place to get parts and service and then the dealer closes shop. Third it would be nice for the Senior Center to have enough cash to purchase the warming/cooking oven and some new tables. A fourth item would be to see an addition built onto the Senior Center to expand the dining room and kitchen and have space for a walk-in center with TV, games, crafts, and a snack bar. Of course a fifth item would be to have an expanded membership list to support the addition.

Now what is the chance of these things happening? Probably the odds are better for me winning the lottery than any one of those five things happening. But there are a lot of things in this area that are indeed unique and wonderful. There is that one hot summer day each year and the many cold and snowy winter days. There's the scenery. Of course there are the people; people who are helpful and friendly like the man who walked up from his small house in back when I got stuck in the driveway of the house in front while delivering Meals-on-Wheels. He brought some sand and helped push my car out. There is the Senior Center where everyone is like family. Yes, there are great things here in coastal Maine. We'll see what the New Year brings for improvements.

The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, 12/18, were Marlene Rines first, Pauline Davis second, Barbara Farrar got low score and Ken Colby had the high hand. On Thursday, 12/20, the cribbage tournament was snowed out.
