Woolwich voters separate CEO/ Fire Chief position
Charlotte Boynton
A few Woolwich voters took care of town business last Wednesday
afternoon, at the town office, in about ten minutes. They elected a
moderator, and approved an article to separate the positions of fire chief
and the codes enforcement office. (CEO)
Selectman-elect Lloyd Coombs was elected as moderator of the brief
meeting. There was opposition voiced at the meeting regarding the article
to split the positions.
The article the voters approved read: "To see if the town will vote to
separate the positions of the fire chief and the codes enforcement
officer/building inspector effectively returning each position back to
part-time employment status and to appropriate a portion of the salary
approved at the May 9, 2007 town meeting ($38,347) to each position as
follows Fire Chief, $9,586, and CEO/Bldg Insp. $28,760. (The breakdown of
the pay is based on 10 hours a week for the fire chief position and 30
hours a week for the CEO/Bldg Insp. position which was the basis for
figuring the salary for the full time combined positions.)
The recent resignation of Kenneth Desmond as fire chief and CEO
prompted the need for the town meeting in order to full the two positions
on a permanent basis.
Woolwich Assistant Fire Chief Jake Kaiser is serving as interim fire
chief until the position can be filled, and William Longley will serve as
the CEO/building inspector until that position can be filled.
The town will advertise for the fire chief's position, as well as a
CEO.
