Mary N. Dow

Mary 'Betsy' Dow (Nee Norton), 78, of Lumberton, N.J., passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2007.

Born in Portland, she was the daughter of the late Alfred M. and Elizabeth M. Norton. She grew up and went to school in Wiscasset and met her husband, Walter S. Dow there.

A resident of Lumberton Leas since 2001, she is formerly of Medford and Medford Lakes, N.J..

Mrs. Dow attended Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. and was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Medford, N.J. for 42 yrs. where she also served as the church secretary for 12 years. She was a volunteer for St. Vincent DePaul and for B-Thrifty II.

Survivors include her husband, Walter S. Dow of Lumberton, N.J.; two children, Nancy Carman and her husband Jack of Medford, N.J. and Scott Dow of Pearland, Texas; one brother, Alfred 'Fritz' Norton of Nashua, N.H.; five grand-children, Beth Kidd, Jesse Pomper, Scotty Dow, Josh Dow and Sean Dow; and a great-granddaughter, Catherine Kidd; and numerous friends and relatives of Wiscasset.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, Dec. 27, at the St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Medford, N.J. Interment was private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family requests memorial donations to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Jones Road, Medford, NJ 08055.

Arrangements were by the Bradley & Stow Funeral Home in Medford, N.J.

Patricia M. Haines

Patricia M. Haines, 83, of Wiscasset, died Saturday, December 29, at the Hill House Assisted Living in Bath.

Born in Akron, Ohio on April 21, 1924, she was a daughter of William F. and Juanita (Hossler) Ramsey.

As a young girl, she moved to Rochester, N.Y. and attended school there. In 1942 she graduated from John Marshall High School.

On January 30, 1949 she married Everett W. Haines and they moved to Wiscasset in 1951.

Mrs. Haines was employed for a few years at Sylvania in Waldoboro and for 11 years as a supervisor of data processing at the Brunswick Naval Air Station.

She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, using her computer and visiting with friends and family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Everett W. Haines on January 3, 2007; and by one daughter, Karen Cossette on March 26, 2001.

Survivors include four daughters, Patricia Connors of Woolwich, Wendy Goud and her husband Ed, and Sheila Sawyer and her husband David, all of Wiscasset, and Lorna Harrington and her husband Dwight of Alna; her dear friend Jean Sutter of Wiscasset; 13 grandchildren, Warren Cossette, Beth Smith, Chris Cossette, Jody Connors, Gail Holbrook, Steven Connors, Tim Love, Duane Goud, Liza Libby, Jon Sawyer, Jillian Burke, Bob Sawyer and Brooke Harrington; and 14 great-grandchildren.

There will be no services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bath Fire Department Driver's Benevolent Association, 864 High Street, Bath, ME 04530; or to Hospice of Mid Coast Maine, 45 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011; or CHANS Home Health, 50 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Leona M. Parrish

Leona M. Parrish, 75, of Dresden, died Thursday, January 3, 2008 at the home of her son, Bobby Price. 

Born in Iowa on January 1, 1933, she was a daughter of Velma and Raymond Roden and a lifetime resident of Wyoming. 

On June 9, 1978 she married Leland "Bud" Parrish in Shoshoni. They later made their home in Riverton. 

An avid reader, Mrs. Parrish also enjoyed crocheting, puzzles and spoiling pets.  

She was predeceased by her husband, Bud Parrish in 2000; and one son, David Price in 2006.

Survivors include one son, Bobby R. Price and his wife Michelle of Dresden; one stepson, Richard Parrish and his wife Doretta of Idaho; one stepdaughter, Frances Parrish of Arizona; one brother, Joe Roden of Riverton, Wyoming; three grandchildren, Torrey Price, Melanie Price and Mykle Price; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton.  Davis Funeral Home will let the arrangements be known in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans.

Wesley Umphrey

Wesley Umphrey, 80, of Hallowell, died Saturday, January 5, 2008 at his residence.

He was born in Seattle, Washington. During World War II, he served his country in the United States Navy and later graduated from Stanford University.

Before moving to Maine Mr. Umphrey was a college administrator and later became a management consultant specializing in executive recruitment. He was based in Nigeria as representative to West Africa for the international Executive Service Corps.

Mr. Umphrey moved to Maine in 1989. He enjoyed buying and renovating older homes in the Hallowell area. For seven years he worked for Health Reach Network as a case manager for Daysping AIDS Support Services. He was a member of Hallowell's Community Development Committee and was also on Senior Spectrums Advisory Board serving as a Liaison in helping to develop the Cohen Community Center.

Survivors include his sister, Martha Doulgas of Seattle, Wash.; several nieces and nephews; and by two special friends, Allen Strickland of Hallowell and Susan Stedman of Westport Island.

At his request there will be no visitation and no funeral service.

Donations in Mr. Umphrey's memory are suggested to Row House Inc., P.O. Box 3, Hallowell, ME 04347; or Morris Farm Trust, P.O. Box 136, Wiscasset, ME 04578; or the charity of one's choice.

Bernice M. Whitfield

Bernice M. Whitfield of Wiscasset, died Sunday, January 6, at Cove's Edge, Damariscotta.

Born October 2, 1919 in Palmer, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mabel (Keith) Slattery. In 1938 she graduated from Monson (Mass.) High School as valedictorian.

After graduation, she worked teaching ballroom dancing at prep schools in the central Massachusetts area. She later worked for Better Brushes during World War II aiding the war effort. During this time, she won the Women's Golf Club Championship at Monson Country Club.

On October 18, 1947 she married William B. Whitfield. She lived in a number of states while her husband served in the U.S. Navy. In 1963 they moved to Wiscasset where they co-owned both Whitfield Drug Store and Whitfield Motel and Cabins. They retired in 1991.

Mrs. Whitfield enjoyed ballroom dancing, knitting, sports cars, traveling, basketball, and spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed following her son's and granddaughter's sports careers even into adulthood.

On June 7, 2004, she was predeceased by her husband.

Survivors include her daughter, Debra J. Bergeron and her husband Maurice of New Smyrna Beach Florida; her son, Stephen L. Whitfield and his wife Janet of Wiscasset; a sister, Barbara J. Kowal of Winchester, Massachusetts; granddaughters, Samantha J. Bishop and her husband Roy of Edgewater, Florida and Sarah M. Whitfield of Wiscasset; a great-granddaughter Alexis M. Bishop of Edgewater, Florida; a niece, Beverly J. Kennedy and her husband Gerard of Winchester, Massachusetts; and two great-nieces.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 19, at 10 a.m. at The First Congregational Church of Wiscasset with Reverend John Potter officiating. A gathering of friends and family will follow after at the Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Wiscasset in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, P.O. Box 350, Wiscasset, ME 04578.
