Cheryl Anderson
Westport Island
Brenda Bonyun
I will start with an apology to my readers for having missed two
columns in a row. The main reason I have slacked off is because there
really has been no news here on our quiet little island.
Also, our family has been stricken with some quirky little virus which
has led to days in bed with sore throats, fevers, headaches, joint and
muscle aches, and sinus pain. As I sit and type, my throat is on fire and
though I've only been up for a couple of hours, I am exhausted. Paul and
Caleb seem to be coming around, however, and now they are taking good care
of me.
This cold and snowy weather does little to lift one's spirits, however,
we do seem to be getting a bit of a January thaw and perhaps this warm
spell will give the road crew a bit of a much needed break. I'd like to
remind people that the crew is out plowing and sanding to the best of
their ability. They are trying to use less salt this year out of concern
for the water quality in our aquifers.
If the roads seem less than desirable, take a couple of deep breaths
and remind yourself that you are lucky enough to live on a quiet island
with little traffic even in the throes of summer, slow your speed down to
about 20 or 25 mph and enjoy the ride. Plan ahead to leave a half hour
early, not just because the roads are wintry, but also because you may
well find yourself behind someone like me; a slowpoke by any standard!
I did manage to find a scrap of news that may well have people licking
their lips… the Westport Volunteer Fire Department will hold its
annual baked bean supper on Saturday, March 8! I'll get the details of the
time and place, so mark your calendars and return here for more
information.
This mid-winter event is always a fun way to catch up with friends you
may not have seen in awhile. If you are new to the island, it's a great
time to meet your neighbors. It's not limited to islanders only and there
is no fee, though donations are graciously accepted.
If you've been thinking of becoming a volunteer for the fire
department, this may be a good time to contact Chief Bob Mooney at
882-5952 to see how you can help. Whether you want to become a fire
fighter, a first responder for medical calls, an EMA volunteer or just
help out around the station, he'll be grateful for your call.
I stopped in at Lori's Island Convenience Store last week and was
pleased to see they are working on organizing a little gift shop area.
They are planning to expand the space to carry small gifts as well as all
occasion cards. This will come in handy as I often find I've nearly
forgotten someone's birthday or anniversary until last minute and I don't
want to run all the way out to Route 1 for a card. Their Friday night
prime rib dinner continues to be a best-seller. Call them at 882-9300 for
details.
I'd like to extend my sympathy to Linda and Billy Delong and Robbie and
Eben Greenleaf in the passing of their brother, Harrison Delong of
Merrimac, Mass. May your fond memories carry you through this time of
sorrow.
