Volunteers needed on Westport Island
Charlotte Boynton
Westport Island Director of Emergency Management (EMA) and Fire Chief
Robert Mooney is seeking volunteers to help with the Emergency Operations
Center in times of a disaster or emergencies.
Mooney will be sending out a town-wide mailing asking for volunteers to
help.
"I am charged with coordinating the responding of emergency service for
disasters, and situations that confront our community," Mooney said. "I
can not do everything my self," he told the selectmen at their meeting
Monday evening.
The selectmen authorized Mooney to use the town's bulk mailing to send
out the letters.
Mooney told the selectmen as part of his EMA duties, and with the help
of a state grant, the county is in the process of compiling a database for
those people with disabilities and special needs. This is a confidential
database and will be accessed only by the EMA directors. In the event of
an emergency people in the database will be contacted, and appropriate
measures will be taken to insure their safety.
Through a grant from the state, planning is underway to provide Lincoln
County EMA with a database for emergency operations planning to include
evacuation, sheltering and warning for people with disabilities and
special needs.
Lynn Gilley Orne, the coordinator for the program, has distributed
registry forms for people in need of that service. Mooney said the forms
will be available at the town office for residents. The questions include:
name, address, telephone, male or female, do you have pets, how many pets,
the registry asks for two contacts to be reached concerning their well
being.
The term "People with disabilities, and special needs," includes but
are not limited to: disabled, the elderly, people with mental health
issues, visual and hearing impaired, single heads of households, children
15 and under, and non-English speaking people.
The goal of the program is to assist with transportation needs,
communications, special diets, service animals, medication and mobility.
Mooney is asking those people on Westport Island with special needs to
allow the volunteers on the island to help them.
The selectmen have selected the following people to service on the ad
hoc Road Committee: Garry Cromwell, Ron Harrison, Jason Albert, and Jim
Cromwell. It is expected their appointments will be made official in next
week's selectmen's meeting.
The Westport Island Harbor Committee has been asked by the selectmen to
draft an ordinance to control moorings around the island and off the
Wright Ferry landing.
The have also been asked to meet with the Wright Landing Committee and
the harbor master to work on other issues.
Radar Speed Trailer Lottery
Westport Island selectmen have sent a letter to the Maine Department of
Transportation (MDOT) informing them that the town will take part in the
lottery for a radar speed trailer to be use in the town.
The speed trailer is equipped with radar for displaying speed messages,
and can be operated 24/7 in all weather conditions, and is designed for
rugged use but with easy flexible setup and operation. It is used to slow
traffic in school zones, busy neighborhoods, and in construction
sites.
