Wiscasset Senior Center
Can you imagine that it has been 10 years since the Community Center
opened here in Wiscasset? I remember coming to the ribbon cutting ceremony
and then taking a tour of the new building including the Senior Center.
There were some neat snacks available to sample in the dining room along
with some great cookies. For all these years the Senior Center has been
cooking up some great food. Over the 10 years we have had only two chefs; Barbara Chubbuck, who
retired a few years ago and our present chef, Steve White. We started out
just serving lunch on Mondays and Thursdays and then expanded to include a
Community Dinner on Wednesday evening. When the facility first opened, our
dining room was served by a small residential style kitchen but now we
have a full commercial kitchen. Most of the new appliances and furnishings
have been paid for by member fund-raising. During the week starting Saturday, February 9 through Friday, February
15 the Community Center will be holding an Open House featuring free
classes and use of the facility. Senior Center meals and activities will
not be free but our prices are quite reasonable so everyone is invited to
come for a lunch or dinner and see what the Community Center offers today.
We do request reservations for meals. Saturday evening, February 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. there will be a Community
Dance that will be free for all ages. Music will be provided by The
Buffalo Creek Band. This should be a great time to listen and dance to
some great music of today and yesterday. And it's FREE! On Tuesday, February 12 the Cribbage Tournament will include lunch.
Cribbage play is just $1 and lunch is only an additional $4. Registration
starts at 9 a.m. and all are welcome. The Cribbage Tournament starts
promptly at 9:30 a.m. with lunch being served at the completion of the
Tournament. The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, Jan. 29, were Betty Sawyer
first, Patty Bridgham second, Dot Kidney got low score and Ron Bodge,
Lewis Vigneault, Patty Bridgham and Larry Roy tied for the high hand. On
Thursday, Jan. 31, the winners were Hal Thayer first, Barbara Farrar
second, Linden Simmons got low score and Hal Thayer had the high hand. The Wiscasset Senior Center extends congratulations to Spectrum
Generations. Senior Spectrum has changed its name to Spectrum Generations
as of January 14, 2008. The new name and look will "encompass the spectrum
of generations who want to not only live longer but to live well." Spectrum Generations, Coastal Community Center in Damariscotta has
purchased the Overlook Building that they have occupied for some years.
Several tenants including Subway will remain but the upper level will
eventually be remodeled to better serve area seniors. The Wiscasset Senior Center has always had a working relationship with
Spectrum Generations and we intend to continue that relationship. We hope
to share more programs in the future and we encourage area seniors to
participate in current programs at both sites. (Reservations, please!) Call 882-8230 at least two days in advance for
meal reservations.) Monday, Feb. 11 - lunch, chicken stir-fry. Tuesday, Feb. 12 - 9:30 a.m. to noon Cribbage and lunch. Wednesday, Feb. 13 - 4:30 p.m. social hour, 5:30 p.m. dinner, roast
