State, Lincoln County Democrats turn out in droves for caucuses; Barack Obama wins
Tim Nason, County Chair
Democrats and un-enrolled voters throughout Lincoln County flocked on
Sunday, February 10 to the most memorable Democratic caucuses in recent
memory. Attendance shattered the previous record setting numbers of 2004,
and statewide, nearly 45,000 attended the caucuses, exceeding the turnout
in 2004 by approximately 28,000.
Figures are still coming in, but at the Great Salt Bay School in
Damariscotta, more than 180 attended the Bristol caucus; 137 Newcastle
voters caucused together; 95 caucused from Nobleboro; and 57 South Bristol
residents caucused and cast their votes. Lynn Connell, organizer of that
seven-town regional caucus, reports that just over 700 residents cast
their votes that day in preference for their candidate.
At the American Legion Post in Boothbay, 103 voters attended from
Boothbay Harbor; 138 from Booth-bay, and 56 from Southport;
Two hundred and forty-four voters caucused at the Miller School in
Waldoboro.
At the Wiscasset Middle School, 98 voters attended from Wiscasset; 67
from Dresden; and 53 from Alna.
At this moment, the delegate count in Lincoln County for Sen. Barack
Obama seems double that for Sen. Hillary Clinton (65 to 31), with some
towns voting overwhelmingly for Obama, other towns voting in equal numbers
for both candidates.
The Lincoln County Democratic Committee would like to thank all who
participated in this historic event, putting up with the elaborate caucus
procedure to cast votes. Many thanks go to the caucus conveners and their
volunteer helpers in each town, who with calm professionalism (and good
humor) coped with a turnout twice of what was expected. The LCDC would
also like to recognize all the town clerks and voter registrars who
registered hundreds of un-enrolled voters in the Democratic Party.
