Early roads topic for Sunday talk
Jay Robbins
Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) will present the third
lecture of its winter series this Sunday, February 17. Kerry Hardy of
Rockport will give a presentation on "Early Settlers and Old Roads of
Mid-coast Maine."
Starting with Indian paths and waterways, the talk will progress
through bridal paths, oxen roads, stage routes, mail routes, etc.
Listeners will learn not only why today's roads go where they do, but also
where long forgotten roads once wound their way through our backwoods.
Kerry Hardy is the former director of the Merryspring Nature Center and
is currently finishing a book on Wabanaki Natural History. His interest in
Indian and colonial Maine history led him to a comprehensive study of the
earliest patterns of travel in Maine. The Lincoln County region has some
especially old and interesting ones that will be discussed with the help
of slides and maps.
These free lectures are held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoons in February,
downstairs at the 911 Communications Center located behind the Lincoln
County Courthouse at Routes 1 and 27 in Wiscasset.
This year's lecture series is sponsored by Les Fossel and Restoration
Resources of Alna. For schedule changes due to inclement weather, please
call 737-2239 after 10:30 A.M. on the day of the lecture.
This past Sunday's snowed out lecture has been rescheduled for March
2.
