Wiscasset Senior Center

Wiscasset Senior Center
Regardless of whatever the groundhog predicted on his day last week, it
still looks like winter. Last Monday the weather was okay, but still there
was a small crowd at lunch. Tuesday we had some snow but 14 people showed
up for cribbage. A good time was had by all, and it continued with the
usual number going out to lunch afterwards to celebrate winning or to
retell the horrors of getting "bad" cards hand after hand. Wednesday morning saw more snow again. That was my day to deliver
Meals-on-Wheels and I did a lot of slipping and sliding on the roads and
got stuck once. Todd and Jeff at the Community Center saw the snow and
road conditions and heard that the schools were going to close early so
they decided to close the Community Center at 2 p.m. Therefore the Senior
Center Community Dinner was also canceled. Now by mid to late afternoon
the roads were in pretty good shape. I drove to Waldoboro in the late
afternoon and Route 1 was just wet. Closing the Center is always a tough
call. But it is always better to err on the side of safety. Because Steve, our chef, had already purchased the items for
Wednesday's dinner, the decision was made to have the Seafood Newburg on
Feb. 13 rather then the Roast Sirloin that was originally planned. Thursday saw some more snow so there was a very small crowd at lunch
and only 13 showed up for cribbage in the evening. Hopefully many went to
the Wiscasset town meeting that evening and that was why there was such a
low turnout for cribbage. The forecast of snow on Saturday night caused the Community Center to
cancel the 10
th
Anniversary Dance. It has been rescheduled to Saturday night, March 29. It
will still feature The Buffalo Creek Band and admission will be free, so
mark that date on your calendar. This week did point out two very important points that do seem to
confuse some Senior Center members. The first point is that if the
Community Center is open then Senior Center meals and activities will take
place. The second point is that the menu for the month is subject to
change. I always hear different stories about what conditions will cause
us to close and other stories about how surprised some people were to hear
that we were open. The fact is that Senior Center meals and activities
will continue as long as the Community Center remains open. But still
don't risk life or limb to attend. I hope everyone has an enjoyable Valentine's Day. Have you seen the
great Valentine's Day display that Barbara Farrar and Bev Lilly put up on
the bulletin board? The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, Feb. 5, were Nancy Schilke
first, Blanche Johnson second, Lewis Vigneault got low score and Patty
Bridgham had the high hand. On Thursday, Feb. 7, the winners were Linden
Simmons first, Keith Bridgham second, Lewis Vigneault got low score and
Jane LaBreck had the high hand. Activities for next week: (Reservations please!) Call 882-8230 at least two days in advance for
meal reservations.) Monday, Feb. 18 - lunch, Shepherd's Pie. Trustee meeting after

Rib. Thursday, Feb. 21 - lunch, Pasta with meatballs. 6 p.m. Cribbage. |
