Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) will present the third lecture of its transportation themed winter series Sunday, February 24.
Nathan Lipfert, Senior Curator at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, will give a presentation titled "Changing Times, Changing Cargoes, Changing Watercraft."
Long before and after the first roads were constructed, it was our rivers and coastal waters that provided the easiest transport.
As our mid-coast region was settled and developed, the types of watercraft found in our region's waters changed and evolved. Specific types of vessel were designed and built locally to meet these changing needs for movement of goods and people in and out of the area. Canoe, bateaux, gundaloe, whale boat, fishing smack, coastal schooner and steamboat are but a few of the many types of working watercraft that helped shape our region.
These free lectures are held at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoons in February and early March, downstairs at the 911 Communications Center located behind the Lincoln County Courthouse at Routes 1 and 27 in Wiscasset.
This year's lecture series is sponsored by Les Fossel and Restoration Resources of Alna. For schedule changes due to inclement weather, please call 737-2239 after 10:30 A.M. on the day of the lecture.
This series concludes Sunday, March 2.
