LCHA presents Sunday talk
Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) will present the final
lecture of its winter series this Sunday, March 2. Jay Robbins of Robbins
Historical Research, Inc., and current President of LCHA, will speak on
"Defining Place: 17th & 18th Century Kennebec Region Maps, Diaries and
Description."
The talk will examine a few of the earliest documents produced by
European and colonial visitors to our region. Serving as enticements and
travel guides for early adventurers and entrepreneurs, these documents
helped define the frontier. Here is the beginning of Maine's travel and
tourism industry.
With a primary focus on the tidewater Kennebec, Robbins will tell the
story of the early exploration and settlement of our Sagadahoc and Lincoln
county region from before the establishment of the Popham Colony in 1607
through about the time of the American Revolution. He will utilize early
maps, diaries, military reports written from the frontier, and other
primary documents to describe for the audience a changing common
understanding of the frontier and what it had to offer.
This free lecture will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon downstairs at
the 911 Communications Center, located behind the Lincoln County
Courthouse at Routes 1 and 27 in Wiscasset.
This year's lecture series is sponsored by Les Fossel and Restoration
Resources of Alna.
