Harbormaster to step down
Paula Gibbs
Wiscasset Harbormaster David Sutter will resign his post as soon as a replacement can be found, Town Manager Arthur Faucher announced last week.
Some of the business that selectmen planned to deal with at their meeting on Tuesday, February 26 was dealt with on Thursday, February 28, after a storm postponed the meeting.
Faucher said he would submit a written description to selectmen of the harbormaster's duties to be published in the near future.
"David will stay on until a replacement is named," Faucher said. Sutter was criticized for not raising up his own personal boat after it sunk in the harbor in December of 2006. Sutter told the newspaper there have been other problems related to the job that prompted him to step down, including problems with mooring assignments.
Selectmen unanimously agreed to accept a $30,000 SHIP (Small Harbor Improvement Program) grant from the state Department of Transportation. Faucher said the town had initially applied for $150,000 to repair Memorial Pier, but he was advised to first apply for money for the design of the pier. The town will match the grant with $30,000.
Selectman Phil DiVece said he would also like the town to take a look at the boat launch area next to the yacht club, "which is practically useless at low tide."
In other action related to the waterfront, Faucher announced that there are two vacancies on the waterfront committee. The vacancies were created after Joe Picirrillo resigned from the committee and Sean Rafter was not reappointed by selectmen when his term was up.
